fun customizing in ubuntu:

1. Change Fonts
a. System>Preferences>Font
b. Try changing the "Window Font" to "Purisa" or something. Increase desktop icon font readability and such.

2. Edit Nautilus
a. Edit>Backgrounds and Emblems...
b. play around with the background. e.g. for me with a brushed metal background I can see my files folders much more clearly

3. Check out keyboard shortcuts, and properties and preferences for EVERYTHING.... You will probably find something you can tweak :D.
a. I turned of file preview in Nautilus and now it loads faster
b. I made my desktop icons and over icons default size much smaller
c. I changed the panels around (simplified it to one 23 px size panel at the bottom)

And that's it :) There is tons more! Have fun playing....
