I was always one of those guys who never used the terms "M$" and "Windoze". I always thought it was immature, and based on anticorporate feelings. Well I just got a job in IT support, it's my first job in the field of computers. I used to use Windoze at home and always managed to keep it working relatively well. Now in defence of M$, the server/client relationship between MS Server and XP is a good concept. The active directory works well at setting permissions, shared printers, etc. I don't think anything like this exists in Linux, and is probably the main reason for M$ so commonly used in office PC's. But damn is Windoze some bloated, crappy, unstable software.

I've been using Ubuntu on my Athlon 2500 for almost 2 years now. I really haven't used Windoze at all at home since discovering Ubuntu, and I never realized how FAST and TROUBLE FREE it is until starting this job. Holy ****!! I don't believe how freaking slow 'doze is, even on new machines with 2 gigs of RAM and the latest CPU's, it doesn't compare to my home PC! Applications crash all the time, and often it's a frustrating chore just to do a simple task. I have not had a crash or glitch since installing Feisty. Not one!! Computing Nirvana! Hell, running 2003 Server as a virtual machine on my box is snappier than on some servers I've used!! I've got a whopping 512MB of RAM!!

What the hell is all this antivirus stuff and security updates? Hasn't M$ found a solution to that yet?? Damn, the size of the updates is bigger than than the whole install of XP!! Is it that bad to require all the added bloat? I personally wouldn't use all those updates, but it's a requirement of my job, and I think they really slow the machine down and make it less stable.

And then there's Vista. Of course it's buggy; it's a new M$ release. Add a psuedo sudo, new gui, move some things around and call it a brand new OS.....yeah right. At least Ubunut gets better with each release.

All I can say is at the end of the day, when I come home and use MY pc, it is the fastest, smoothest computer I have used all day. Right now with Feisty, I have the most stable, smooth operating computer I have ever owned or used.

I just had to rant a little because Windoze really is a joke of an OS.

sounds to me like the current IT staff at your job doesn't know what they're doing.

I share your feelings. My Windows XP VM works much faster with 256MB than it used to work with my whole 1GB RAM (only use it for Photoshop and Flash). Linux is rock-solid OS indeed, amazing if you come from a 'doze background.

Agreed.

I've been using Ubuntu for about a year now. After using it for about 6 months, I started to think that it was a little buggy here'n'there. Then I spent a bit of time on other peoples computers which were running Windows. And as a fair comparison, I think that Windows is the most unstable. Sure, things sometimes crash in Linux - but this only happens when you do something dumb, and at least it doesn't freeze your whole computer.

I like Linux; it's simple, trustworthy and doesn't screw-up randomly. Vista is a stupid idea - they have all this DRM-BS running in the background, and they think that having a good processor etc will handle it. It just doesn't work! It still crashes due to it's super-bloated-crappyness plus software conflicts!

Microsoft has no idea how to make an OS.

One of the most annoying things in Windows is the need to reboot after installing or removing everyday software. Even the most irrelevant programs can demand rebooting.
You need automatic updates on and an antivirus installed, otherwise the security center will keep bugging you consistently. Automatic updater needs reboot once in a while and when it needs a reboot it will pop up every five minutes until you reboot. There's no option to turn it off. (Except messing with registry) Antivirus software will suck up all your system resources.
Meanwhile software doing even the simplest tasks will cost you money. You can't find a good free partition manager and free cd burning software ruins your blank cds, a good antivirus costs a alot and so on.

I don't get why you say that you think using terms like "M$" and "Windoze" is immature, then you say it all through your article.

Sounds more like he used to think such terms were immature, but he recently snapped due to bad experiences and so changed his stance. :)
