Hi
This is another, I messed up my root account so please help me, thread. I have tried the solution, starting mysql_safe with --skip-grants-tables which didn't work for me.
Now since I was able to log in as my normal user and get all my data out, is there a way to just erase everything and start again with a fresh root account?

Reinstall MySQL.

Reinstall MySQL.
Tried that using synaptic (still on dapper) but it didn't seem to get rid of the config files.

Delete everything first before reinstalling.

Hmm... fair enough. I was going to ask how to do that but appearently I missed the complete removal option in synaptic. I guess that it was hard to miss, seeing as how it was written with letters... and not pictograms. Damn... so this was a stupid question to begin with. Sorry about that.

It is easy to overlook things, your question was not stupid.
