Has anyone (or can anyone) get this to work?
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-125553-highlight-ubuntu.html
I have an idea. What if portage was for Ubuntu? (and other not Gentoo distros)
Hear me out.
One big complaint people have about Ubuntu is that its hard to get programs that aren't in the ubuntu repos or when the newest version is not in the repos.
What if that script could be used to bolt Portage on to Ubuntu? Let it be an "unofficial" and "unsupported" way to install programs?
Cool thing about portage is that it compiles the program on the spot. Till now Gentoo people use the power of that to customize. Why can't non-Gentoo users use that to get programs with less hassle? A recent discussion here on the forum taught me that universal binaries that install on many distros is possible but difficult. Why go through it? Its easy to make an ebuild. Let ebuild be the new tar file and portage the new delivery system (instead of web sites).
Sounds like a way to fix a problem. Linux style. If a few things can be done.
Is there a way to make an "ubuntu default" with the use tags? Make them so that they are sane without messing with them, and maybe mimic how Ubuntu packages install things?
Sounds great.
Seems like getting it installed is hard to do though.
