Trouble uninstalling polypaudio

I am currently trying to get sound working in videogames. To that end, I installed polypaudio. Now I want to remove it. However, using synaptic, removal also requires the removal of ubuntu-desktop.

Will removing ubuntu-desktop affect my system? Can I safely remove polypaudio and then reinstall ubuntu-desktop?

ubuntu-desktop, AFAIK, is a metapackage and won't hurt anything.
