Being new to the Linux world I was initially amazed by the possibilities of tweaking the look of my desktop. Now, after a few weeks, I'm not that impressed with it anymore. Or, to be honest, I've run out of ideas and sources of inspiration.

I've been spending hours looking at screenshots of people's desktops and after a while everything looks the same: It's some variation of Gnome (highly identifiable), some variation of KDE (highly identifiable) or the high tech look of Fluxbox (highly identifiable). Don't get me wrong -- I do think a lot of screens look really nice and there is obviously a lot of skill and work behind. I just want to see something really unique and/or interesting. Downright ugly is ok too, as long as it's different.

So here's my suggestion: Post a screenie of a desktop (yours or someone elses) that you find unique or interesting for whatever reason.

Thanks.

Curious as to whether you find Windows themes more inspiring? Is it the choice of icons or the color or the window manager itself?

Plus where have you been able to look in the last few weeks that allowed you to bore so quickly?

The way I see it, since there is no more configuring available, he got bored....

KDE and Gnome are both better than Windows!!

Whoa...it seems like I came across as a MS-loving Linux basher -- I can assure you I'm not. To answer your first question: No, I don't find Windows themes more inspiring. I think they are all horrible.

As for your second question: I've looked here, Gnome Look, Boxwhores, DeviantArt, the Fluxbox site and quite a few other places. More art/theme site suggestions would be appreciated.

Anyway, I do not think that all the various Linux looks are bad --quite the opposite, I've seen loads of nice looking themes that are far beyond anything in Windows. In fact, I find the default Ubuntu theme to be one of the best themes ever. It's really unique (although still very Gnome-looking) and a very fresh step away from all the various blue techy styles. I'm just starting to get used to the most common desktop trends in Linux and feel the urge to see something that is radically different.

Sorry for judging too harsh, then...

Perhaps you would like After Step...

If you want something completely different, have a look at the 'Mezzo' DE on SymphonyOS, it's still in alpha (must be close to beta now) but is fine to play with from the live cd, or an a spare box if you have one lying around. I has a completely new concept of the desktop, with 'corner targets' and desktop menus. It's not my favourite (I guess I'm just not used to it) but is definately interesting and something to tinker with ;)

Ion is great but not very customizable in terms of looks ;)
