Just used Vista extensively for the first time. I gotta say I am actually impressed. It looks like they took positives from Macs and Linux and added them to XP but either way Vista is very pretty. Lots of candy and effects and runs smooth as opposed to what I first thought.

Also like the redone control panel. Will be a hard decision once my current laptop dies if I get a linux machine or go with pre-installed vista.

vista is not that bad if you tweak it, but definitely it's not worth even 10% of its actual price (especially ultimate, which is outrageous expensive)

Yeah but Linux also takes some tweaking remmember. Overall I won't be going to Vista, only reason I would is if my current laptop died and I needed a new one. Currently though Kubuntu and my laptop are very happy together.

Did you update it yet? I liked it until the updates bogged it down considerability.

& I think Aero is ugly. :D

ugly or not, it's sure useless and a resource hog

I have to agree with the OP. Vista really isn't as bad as everyone says it is, and it's fine for personal use. Sure, power users will bitch and moan, but for my parents, it's OK. Although, IE7 sucks. But that's pretty much it.

Although I do love how Microsoft over-estimated the hardware requirements. I run Aero smoothly and fast on 64 MB of shared video RAM, which isn't surprising because Compiz Fusion can run on the same amount.

All in all, Vista isn't bad in and of itself, but I still wouldn't go near it except if I had to.

it's not that it's bad, but after 5 years of development , the money involved and MS resources implied, you would expect more: like being DAMN good. especially for the price you have to pay

Actually, I got my copy for free. So I couldn't care less. I should augment my previous post. For what it is worth, Vista isn't that bad.

So is compiz.

And they can both be disabled.

Why is it that people, especially Linux users, who are skilled and knowledgeable on computers, always seem to complain the most about optional features. If you don't like something, then ******* disable it, don't go complain on a forum.

I agree in Linux you can disable compiz or any "hog" features you want. Sadly in Windows you normally cannot though. The computer I used it on had 2GB Ram so resource hoging was not much of a problem.

Yes, you can disable Aero... but it is meant not to be disabled.

There are some menus, options, regular things (this is, not eye candy) that you lose if you go back to Classic (=Win 95-like) interface; something in XP didn't happen: In XP, Classic is full-featured.

you're wrong. there aren't just 2 options: aero and win95 theme. there is vista theme clasic, with vista menus, windows borders etc, but with no effects and animations. that one I found to be the most pleasant, in terms of speed and good-look.

If your laptop dies, just Dual-Boot Kubuntu & Vista, thats what I'm doing with my pc :)

And Vista runs fine on my pc too, I have 1GB RAM, and 128 dedicated gfx, runs really smooth, although yes, it does use about 54% of my RAM, whereas Ubuntu uses about 20% if that.

And I like aero, it looks quite nice when it runs well, prefer it to the basic themes, I just can't be bothered to make Ubuntu look similar :P
