So I want to install the new GNOME and applicable software. Do you know of any third party repositories I can use? I've been trying to find one but to no avail.

Gnome is never backported to any Ubuntu release. The only way to get the latest Gnome is to upgrade to the latest Ubuntu release (when it's released.) Ubuntu almost always coincides its releases with Gnome releases. Sure, it's possible, in theory, to install the latest Gnome in an older Ubuntu release but doing so would be so wrought with problems that it's simply easier to upgrade to the newest Ubuntu.

So then in hypothetical theory, what would one be looking at mostly to upgrade besides the distribution as a whole? Obviously Gnome thus the existance of the thread, but there would be X11/X.org, Kernel, would probably have to compile all form cvs/git I'd imagine to boot. But in theory - what other 'packages' would need to be looked after -- again in theory.

kind of sad to think that there are no other repositories out there. Aside from GNOME, does anyone know of any decent sized third party repositories. I don't mean to diss the Ubuntu ones but sometimes I just like to have more up to date software and I dont't alwayts have time to do it by source.

That would probably be my only real pet peeve with Ubuntu, aside from that it's a great OS. Hey, nothing's perfect.
