Windows XP and Vista machines as "normal behavior." ZDNet blogger Adrian Kingsley-Hughes has been writing the last two days about a "stealth" update that occurred on his and other machines in late August, even though those machines are set to not install automatic

Yes, Microsoft once again shows its customers who really owns their systems, and it is not the customers:):)
And there's another thread on this here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=550377

I wonder why this behaviour doesn't surprise me anymore. This is the living proof of the number of backdoors windows must have for the guys at redmond spy whatever they want on a Windows Computer.
This behavior however can be a silent fix that microsoft didn't wanted to report on their bulletin reports, for afterwards they could say.
"Hey our system are more secure than linux since we release fewer security updates"

Yeah, but still that leaves the question of how can they do this even if the user disabled auto-updates? That must make windows users seriously ask themselves what else can Redmond do without the user's knowledge or consent?

They've build the system, its closed source. They can do whatever they please with it, and even log in to your windows session if they wanted.
Windows is famous by its backdoors, and net connections even when you don't choose to connect to the net.
I saw a website that give credible facts that where retrieved from some firewalls, referred that if you do a simple search for a file in your computer using the find from windows, it will establish a connection to the internet to a microsoft server (if you have a connection configured of course)
So pretty much yes, anything its possible

Hmm, what if you had a Linux firewall box that it had to go through? I wonder if it piggybacks on a connection or it's a seperate connection to Redmond.

That's one thing I love about Ubuntu - hassle-free updates.
You get them when they are released, not every 2ND Tuesday of the month.
You ALWAYS get them. With MS you have to futz around with manually downloading updates yourself every two or three months or your automatic updates stop working. I've had to download that crummy Windows Genuine Advantage thing so many times now I am sick of it. (I have a network of 22 XP machines at work and it is no joy, believe me!)
Thanks for indulging my little rant.

Ok? :P Though I don't see how that's related unless Ubuntu also stealth updates lol.
