seems that vista is not such a market success....compared to XP. office 2007 leads the sales...

neah, that's only referring to box sales. Vistas target public are the "sitting ducks" who swallow everything that comes with their new pc and are mortified at the thought of hardware or software tweaks.

The body of vista sales will be on new systems, and with over 60 mil. licenses it's doing quite well, still lagging a bit behind xp, but it will catch up in the next year, since not everyone can change their computer on a whim in the first months after release.

Well:

-Vista will be a success since most people don't know that they can ditch it for XP or Linux.
-Office will be a success because most people blindly buy the newest thing without looking at the alternatives or doing research.

either way they'll both bring huge profits to MS....

They made a mistake with Office 2007: they should have made it Vista specific. I could imagine the outcry, and I bet you can too, but most businesses would knuckle under....

That said, I really, really liked Office 2007 when I was beta testing it. Office 2007+ Sharepoint 2007 is a very powerful duo...I don't think there is anything similar in Open Source, but there should be. :)

I guess they couldn't, it would be too much, even for MS. considering that all windows market share consisted of XP...and releasing office 2007 to work just with vista which was yet to be launched...would have been a huge mistake. the business world and the home users would have simply stick to office 2003

I doubt businesses would've knuckled over. They're actually against changing operating systems and software. It takes forever to test the new one and get it ready for system wide deployment. Not to mention the costs (while they do get discounts for bulk purchases I can guarantee you, no upgrade at all compared to an even a discount on a bulk purchase is cheaper). Heck companies now are still using 2000 even though some (or maybe most) have finally got around to switching to XP.

If Microsoft had made Office 2007, Vista only compatible, the only thing they would've suceeded in doing is screwing themselves over in both Vista and Office 2007 sales. They may have gotten sales from the consumer front, but on the business front it takes a while for the switchover to occur.

I personally think MS office 2007 is a very good buy. Its the best office program out there by a long shot, the ease of the menu layout and formating of documents is brilliant in it - i used open office up until the start of this year and got office 2007 for the heck of it and now i am writing reports for school (piratically daily) i notice the difference between the two.

When open office hopefully comes out with something similar i will use it again, but until then MSoffice 2007 all the way.

Hmm, I'm not seeing it. Scattered icons and a bloated interface, a word processor does not make.

I can't argue about this. yes, it's good, even better than openoffice. but compare how much openoffice costs and how much office 2007 costs. people always tend to forget this and compare a free product which commercial ones...for my - I dare to say modest needs - openoffice is good enough

Lots of businesses and whole government departments are still running Windows 2000 and are unlikely to change in the next few years.

The Microsoft upgrade treadmill is feared by large users. It is the smaller users that get caught up in it.

What I don't like is that MS has stopped to release Word, Excel, PPoint, etc. standalone. I have never bought Office, just Word, because it's what I need. But since Office 2003, that's not possible.

The same goes for OO, scattered icons - Word 07 at leasts keeps them grouped. Try writing a few 2000+ word essays with both and see which one is better to format your document with. Yea Open office is better than say 2003 or similar but it is old and they seemed to tried hard to copy MS and not make their own product unique in any ways.

I use both extensively (because I need office for college) and I really don't see what Office 07 has to offer over its previous versions. Maybe a prettier face, but I perfer an office suite that focuses on open standards. It looks similar to 03, but I think that's because OO is modeled after StarOffice, where Sun probably wanted to keep a consistant interface so that others could switch from MS Office. Again, I'm still not seeing the logic in the icon positions for 07. Having a straightforward menu system is more than enough.

Done before in Writer. Well I used Word XP too (for the grammar check since English isn't my first language).
