Hi there

I am planning to set up a web sever for my school as a project that all students can take part of. Although there are new PC’s about the school, I doubt I will be able to use any of these.

So is there a recommended spec to running an Ubuntu server or the desktop package with AMP installed?

If you are planning a basic web server for your students, any new machine will do.

we are not talking about a commercial web site with thousands of hits per hour so the best thing you can do is to start a normal machine.

Then if needs be, you will have time to consider buying a real small/big server and transfer the existing data to it.

I run a LAMP server on an old P3 700MHz with 256MB RAM. That does the job fine because I don't get many hits. You could try starting with something like that and if necessary upgrade to something with a bit more grunt in the future.
