I read about the new ubuntu version 6 being released in april of 06, it is backed by commericial funding and will be supported for 3 years desktop and 5 years server....does this translate into paying for ubuntu?
I hope not... [-X

First off, the versions are year followed by month. So the release in April will be 6.04 (2006, 4th month)
Second. Nope. You'll never have to pay for ubuntu. You CAN pay for extra support though, or at least you WILL be able to. If I recall correctly, it's backed by the Ubuntu Foundation, not commercial funding, but Canonical is a corporation that does, has, and probably always will back Ubuntu, headed by Mark Shuttleworth. Canonical pays the salaries of everyone who works as a developer for Ubuntu, as well as marketing, etc. So, in short, it has always been backed by commercial funding, but this latest increase in funds is from a non-profit foundation that Shuttleworth set up. And we'll never have to pay for it.

To clear the air about the enterprise Ubuntu:
1. Release every 18 months
2. Supported for 5(It may be 6) years on server, 3 on desktop
3. Will be free
4. Parallel release cycle to normal ubuntu. The six month releases are not going anywhere
5. The code name for Breezy+1 (the first enterprise release) has not been chosen yet.

" 4. Parallel release cycle to normal ubuntu. The six month releases are not going anywhere"
So you mean there aren't going to be releases every 6 months anymore?
EDIT: oh I get it. I thought that by "not going anywhere" you mean they were getting nothing accomplished. But no, you mean they're not leaving. I'm an idiot.
