I purchased a Western Digital 60 GB USB 2.0 Passport 2.5" External Hard Drive ( WDXMS600TN ).
*
I've a double operating system with Linux & Windows XP.
*
The External Hard Drive has Windows programming taking up 5 gigs of the 60 gig storage space. Are these Windows programs/files needed for this device to work in windows? It works perfectly fine in Linux and I could certainly use the space.

you will be fine deleting the files.

Seconded, I've had this before on external HDs, sometimes the vendor puts in additional software as in this case - although looking at it I'm not too sure what it does just by looking at the files. If you want to be ultra-sure of interoperability, format as fat32 - if those files are on a separate partition.

It annoys me so when vendors do this. I want the space, not sellware!

format the drive in ext3, install the windows driver, enjoy a great filesystem. pity there is no XFS driver for windows.

OK, I dumped the 'passangers' and the disk works beautifully.

Thanks for the advice :)

I got a Western Digital iBook recently. Great drive, but it was advertised as 250 Gigs, but there were only 218 in reality. Apparently this is common, but I was pissed.

Anyway, thought I would share.

I use the sucker for transfer of large numbers of files between users. And for traveling.

Yea, I use it to sync my music between the desktop and lappy. Which also has the added benefit of making a backup in the process.

It would do allright for the core programs in my machine, but mine's soon to be almost 400 gig, that's a bit of a stretch....lol:lolflag:
