Okay, I've been using sdlmame (v0.118u3) for a short while in Ubuntu Feisty and find it absolutely excellent, but I'm finding that a couple of my fave games are reporting missing files. R-Type, including the World, USA and Japanese versions for example, is complaining of missing files and won't run.
I understand that as Mame updates, often so do the romsets and you should upgrade those too. I've never done this before, but is there a way to do this in Ubuntu, and can you offer any advice or point to a tutorial on how to do it? I've tried downloading roms from different locations, but to no avail.
Many thanks in advance. :)

Generally it's not a good idea to ask for locations to download ROMs and such since technically it's illegal to do so. The only legal method would be to dump the ROM directly from an arcade board you own.
That said, you generally just have to look for the latest full set of ROMs for that particular game -- some ROM files depend on another to provide a full working ROM (they act as sort of a patch for a master ROM). Sometimes the expected set can be a bit hard to find since sometimes *MAME changes what ROM set is expected.
Good luck.

Sorry, but I wasn't asking for a place to download up to date roms. What I was getting at was that I thought there was a tool you could use for updating your roms and the files. I don't know if I've got the wrong end of the stick, but I thought this was what clrmamepro did for Windows users, and I was asking if there was an equivalent for Ubuntu.
Sorry if I'm barking up the wrong tree! I'll have another look around.

i could be wrong, but i'm pretty sure that there is not a rom manager for linux that has a frontend/gui. only command line programs. but i'd recommend using clrmamepro with wine. thats what i do, it works almost without issue.
