wel i a m on the e17
but i m lost
lol
THANKS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
i make a french translate of you how to :
http://frechdesign.free.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=78
Thanks :lolflag:

Glad to hear it :)

At least e17 is a litle "strange" and "depurated" compared to others environment, but as one take some time, try to configure it to his/her tastes and uses it can be very rewarding.
It's so flexible!

Check some of my suggestions for customizations on 1st post, too.

Thanks for the link on the French forum. :)
Your previous method looks a bit complicated (well my french it's extremely limited...)
Just a note, avoid create the .desktop file directly. If the starts (exec) changes name, has it happened before, it will be broken. A symbolic link keep it always synchronized with the install version.
Ohh, and mix e libs on the system used to be the biggest source of weird and hard to trace compile errors.
Avoid too, mixing the 2 ways of installation.

Have fun
:)

Rui Pais, has simplified the installation of e17 on any Debian based distro by building the "Oz OS e17 CVS Deb".

You are welcomed to use the "Oz OS e17 CVS Deb" (http://ruialeixopais.planetaclix.pt/linux/e17_cvs_0.0-3_all.deb)

For more information & support go to the Oz OS board (http://cafelinux.org/forum/index.php/topic,892.0.html) or simply post here in this thread. ;)

My gtk theme it's simply the old Glossy. Nothing fancy.
For me the advantage of Glossy is that it allow to tweak color theme, something implemented on feisty, but that most themes, regrettably, still miss.
Now the difficulty is how to set that color change on a .gtk* file (to use your terminology). Because, default glossy is blue, that i find much more ugly and mismatch then Orange.

Hi.

I recovered this quote from a few posts ago :).

Can you give me a link to a place where this syntax is written? I downloaded gray-theme but I don't like it much...

Regards (good final of weekend )

EDIT: How can I create a "shortcut" to Shutdown the computer in a shelf?

EDIT#2: Now I'm having a huge problem: I can log into E17, run applications but the widows are invisible, you can only see the border shadow. They are not hanged up, if you know where are the buttons they respond. I think this is a bling module problem, but as I can't see the applications it's impossible to disable it.

I had this same issue using bling.
The terminal will still be functioning, run it from the launcher and type the following:

enlightenment_remote -module-unload bling

Even though you cant see the command it does get sent and everything will switch back to normal instantly.

I would love enlightenment_remote to work outside of e, like it used to.
Anyone know how?

Hi neonl,
sorry my late answer, been running lately (bad weekends and today bureaucracy at Lisboa... a nightmare...)

Yes, thats a problem that happens with gutsy (i think its the X server version).
Sketchy solution is the best option. Or, if one don't feel secure typing blindly at terminal, he/she can move away (temporarily) /opt/e17/lib/enlightenment/modules/bling file from a console or another DE.

Anyway, if an e config it's borked beyond hope you don't need to install, just remove your e config by do: rm -rf .e

About the question on gtk syntax... sorry thats something i had already mention. I don't know much (or nothing) about it. If someone have some lights on hit i gladly accept suggestions and ideas,
Till then, the best option would be start gnome-settings-manager or xfce equivalent (see 1st. post) and the tools for config of the gnome/xfce.

About a shutdown icon, just do a launcher wit the following "Executable":
enlightenment_remote -shutdown
thats all, hth.
Rui.

Hi,
evolve it's broken and/or can compile under Ubuntu.
It's a developer tool, not need for a normal user. You can (must) skip it.
Check the warning about it on 1st. post.

Hi all.

Thanks RAV TUX.

I'm glad to inform you that, as RAV TUX mentioned above, there are now a much better approach yo this method, full automatic and full compatible.

Please check the new version of the 1st post.
Thank you all, for your trials, your posts and suggestions and your courage to give a try to this wonderful environment.

It's in this occasions when I think "how is it possible to use Window$"?! :)

Rui, I went to that post, but I didn't quite understand what exactly is that .deb... Is it a program to install, update, etc from the CVS? If so, it's kind of a substitute for the morenlexus script?

Thanks

Thanks for asking :)

Well it's in fact a (basic) wrapper for the **all** how-to. It still uses morlenxus script.
A user will not need to do anything anymore.
Just install the deb, wait till it finishes and login to his/her new fresh enlightenment.
(My ultimate quest, make all e17 users lazy )

For distro creators, a deb can be useful either as for a quick way of build the e environment or to require a running distro based on that to do an upgrade, always accessible manually at any time, anyway. I keep the thing as flexible as possible.

Hope you all like it
:)

Well that must be cool. I was trying to do an Enlightenment distro based on Ubuntu server with the "cool" apps for doing stuff pre-installed, but my knowledge of Linux aren't enough for that. Besides have lots of Maths and Physics to study (I think you know what this is :D).

Cumpz ;)

After installing the .Deb I get an error when i try to log into Enlightenment saying

"No Exec line in the session file: enlightenment Running gnome failsafe session instead"

I was messing around trying to compile E17 just before the .Deb was released. I'm wondering if it's buggered something up along the way...

any ideas?

By the way, I just experienced another glitch (you should really put together a problem faq on the first post, Rui). You have to leave your rendering engine on Software, or else new windows will open up without borders.

Hi all,
sorry today i've been very busy and only now i see the huge quantity of post that appear.
Thank you all for trying it.

Thanks neonl for answering about the ewl issue.
Thats true an annoying bug seems to prevent the compile of ewl in one step for users doing it for the first time...
I make the mistake to remove that warning from the 1st. post.
I will put it there immediately to avoid further complications (I know people don't read full threads before try the how-tos :)) Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi Rui.

Finally someone installed E17 with the tutorial @ techzonept.
I wanted to ask two things, one is that - if you can - pass there, to answer one thing to that guy, and the other one is if you think that I should update that Howto for the new .deb package?

Another 2 points.
For non-critical packages the deb do not install dependencies (only suggest them). Right now the one suggested are: libxine-dev, libmpd-dev, scrot, alsamixergui. Of course if that was a deb from a repo user would install suggested packages with apt or aptitude, since it's not the case (it's planned for the future project Oz that RAV TUX mentioned) the user will have to install them when needed.
I will add that to the How-To.

Finally i change my first version of the new how-to. For the same reasons, dpkg will not install the debs dependency. So a simple solution it's use gdebi on command line:

sudo gdebi e17_cvs_0.0-3_all.deb

I don't know if you need the compiling tools that were referred in the old method:sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install build-essential cvs libtool libltdl3-dev automake1.9 autotools-dev libpopt-dev libcurl3-dev libx11-dev x11proto-xext-dev libbz2-dev libid3tag0-dev libpng12-dev libtiff4-dev libungif4-dev libjpeg62-dev libssl-dev libfreetype6-dev bison flex gettext libimlib2-dev libxml2-dev libxcursor-dev libgtk1.2-dev autoconf pkg-config libpng3-dev libxine-dev libxkbfile-dev libsqlite3-dev giblib-dev libxmu-dev libxdamage-dev libxcomposite-dev libtag1-dev libtagc0-dev giblib-dev libasound2-dev libxslt-dev libpam0g-dev libdbus-1-devbut I think you don't, if you did, Rui would have mentioned.

I didn't try the new .deb, but if you skip those things (entrance, the filemaneger, etc) you must install replacements with GTK apps like xfce4-terminal, thunar, any media player...

Hi,
a brave man :)

I am very interested in that... (i'm to do that for at least a week and can't find time to do it :()

In theory you need first xorg, gdm and gdebi:
then install deb with gdebi from command line (see my previous post).

You should be able to get any extra app from your running e17 later.

Please, give feed back on how it runs, ok?

Many thanks

After installing the .Deb I get an error when i try to log into Enlightenment saying

"No Exec line in the session file: enlightenment Running gnome failsafe session instead"

I was messing around trying to compile E17 just before the .Deb was released. I'm wondering if it's buggered something up along the way...

any ideas?

Hi,
yes could be that or maybe you find a bug...

You post later that you have hit the ewl bug. Do you solve the previous issue? or do you started from fresh?

Do you still have problems with login?

Hi RM,
Yes i will give a eye on hit and try to post but i i can only do it in a hour or so (put C to O-O, my time ;))

And yes, the new deb it's easier and do exactly what a user would do by hand, automatically (less type errors and so...)

Thats it, deb will take care of needed dependencies (as long as it runs by gdebi). Install manually any of libxine-dev, libmpd-dev, scrot, alsamixergui as need.

Good luck all

I'm also doing that. Creating a thing called "Encharcada Linux", kind of silly :D.

Another suggestion (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3808602&postcount=26) (not tested, but reports on success or failure are welcome)

@neonl
It seems that Pt question will have to wait till tomorrow... sorry
Check the link above too for "Encharcada" (what a strange name... não tens medo que meta água?)

@all
I uploaded a new deb.
Solved the issue of scrot (my mistake, sorry for the inconvenience)
If anyone that get this issue in the past and finish by the installation after install scrot may need too:
sudo easy_e17.sh --only=slideshow,tclock,uptime,weather,winselect,wla n

It work now on Edgy too (tested)
It compile on slow machines without eating all resources (a bad choice i made before, corrected)

Have all fun

Thanks for try it :)
Are you sure that installer finish successfully?
Did it aborted 1st time on ewl? have you redo the gdebi command?

can you post the output of:
apt-cache show e17-cvs|grep Status
cat /usr/share/xsessions/enlightenment.desktop
and
ls /opt/e17/bin/

I will post the terminal output of the commands you posted, hopefully they will answer your questions :)

You're welcome :)
(and helping too)

There is an issue with ewl package.
When one installs from fresh it usually aborts at that package (you may not noted in the output...)
That's not a really stopper, if one try it again it continues without the problem appears (must be a wrong check sequence on make/install scripts i think).

So your installation it's not finished in fact, it must be restarted again with:
sudo gdebi e17_cvs_0.0-3.1_all.deb
and check if it says that you successfully finished.

Good luck and post on any failure.

Now if you run

Good luck.

Glad to know :)

Luckly this ewl issue is being addressed right now, theres been a lot of cvs changes related to ewl callback tests (http://cia.vc/stats/project/e/e17/libs/ewl), lets hope it will be fixed soon.

Note that any new updates or full installs with an existent cvs tree don't give that error, luckly.

Have fun.

By the way, I just experienced another glitch (you should really put together a problem faq on the first post, Rui). You have to leave your rendering engine on Software, or else new windows will open up without borders.

Hi smartboyathome (i like your user name ;))

Sorry i almost slipped this post of yours. I know that issue has been addressed but i wanted to post a link here.

Please, anyone having problems with bling module, please check suggestions here (http://cafelinux.org/forum/index.php/topic,894.0.html).

On rendering engines. That part i don't understand much, sorry.
I use the default. I will search for an interesting discussion of the subject on Gentoo forum...
Anyone with hard questions on this specific issue can ask there, theres 2 or 3 guys on know a lot more on that than me.
Here (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-529895-start-600-postdays-0-postorder-asc-highlight-.html) the actual thread on e17.

Thanks.

@neonl
It seems that Pt question will have to wait till tomorrow... sorry
Check the link above too for "Encharcada" (what a strange name... não tens medo que meta água?)

Encharcada's name is a double trick. First, it starts with EN and in second place, is the name of a typical Portuguese desert (you must know, in my opinion is delicious) and I wanted a desert name inspired on Sabayon Linux, Sabayon it's an Italian desert... Still a bad name though

Ah, i see
I had already get the beginning with En ... btw, i don't think i ever eat it :(

-------------------------------------------------------------

@all
I have updated the deb (although i keep the number version to preserve links)
I advise anyone to upgrade.
It now skips bling module to avoid the issue of invisible windows.
Users that want to try it anyway have to edit /etc/.easy_e17.conf --skip list by hand in the usual way,
but i recommend to use this method here (http://cafelinux.org/forum/index.php/topic,894.msg2447.htm).

It now cleans e17 installations.
sudo apt-get remove e17-cvs
deletes conf file and remove entry from gdm/kdm.

sudo aptitude purge e17-cvs
removes too the installation on /opt/e17

.e17_cvs code tree must be deleted by hand (the less times one download it, less loads will be upon e17 cvs servers and less time wasted for the user on installs)

It removes too some annoying bugs on BlackEmerald theme (installed by default) Check more here (http://cafelinux.org/forum/index.php/topic,885.0.html).

hope you all like it :)

Hi b9anders,
sorry but that would only work if the deb contained already precompiled binaries.
You need the dependencies installed before run the deb/compile the code.
Try this way:
sudo aptitude install build-essential cvs libtool libltdl3-dev automake1.9 autotools-dev libpopt-dev libcurl3-dev libx11-dev x11proto-xext-dev libbz2-dev libid3tag0-dev libpng12-dev libtiff4-dev libungif4-dev libjpeg62-dev libssl-dev libfreetype6-dev bison flex gettext libimlib2-dev libxml2-dev libxcursor-dev libgtk1.2-dev autoconf pkg-config libpng3-dev libxkbfile-dev libsqlite3-dev giblib-dev libxmu-dev libxdamage-dev libxcomposite-dev libtag1-dev libtagc0-dev giblib-dev libasound2-dev libxslt-dev libpam0g-dev libdbus-1-dev

and then
sudo dpkg -i e17_cvs_0.0-3.1_all.deb

good luck

no, b9anders is right. after executing dpkg -i the first time without the dependencies installed, apt-get -f install will pick up the list of missing dependencies and try to resolve them. i wouldn't even call it a dirty method ;) it's quite useful, if you are installing from a commandline install.

Yes, but thats not the point in this case. the deb it's just a wrapper for the script and conf files. Even code it's download after install. dependencies, besides compile tools contains too the header files, needed for compile.
With binaries works cause they are already compiled, so as soon as you get the dependencies they can run... in this case run a dpkg an apt and a dpkg again when there are a correct procedure it's more then dirty, it's shooting voluntarily your own foots.

I believe theres a way to do that using dpk, apt or aptitude, but i don't know why (which flags exactly). gdebi can do it. And i think it has only gtk dependencies not gnome itself.

McDuff
November 22nd, 2007, 12:35 PM
ok, i think there's a bit of a misunderstanding, and i'm not sure if i got your last post right.
i didn't want to say that it isn't dirty but only that it works that way, because dpkg shouldnt touch the script and config files unless the dependencies are met. so it aborts on first try and only begins compiling after their installation with apt-get -f install when doing dpkg -i again. at least it spared me a lot of time when trying it on a bare command line install.
looking through man pages of dpkg, apt-get and aptitude i couldn't find a flag that does it.

besides: on my first e17 installation (following the correct method;)) i can't update. it always aborts after checking out chinese po file. is anybody else having this issue?

I know that it happens that way :)
My only point was only that is safer to get the dependencies by hand, list it's big but it's available.
You are assuming that apt-get install -f will always work perfectly and that any deb is always well done and lists dependencies correctly... I'm not sure of none of those.

Besides give a command that one knows from the beginning that it will not work, when there are available a list of dependencies, well is kinda of weird ;)

Just another note, gdebi it's available as command-line only, a package named gdebi-core.It depends of python packages only.
Usual gdebi, as both GUI and command line, have as gnome dependencies only gnome-icons and gksu.

besides: on my first e17 installation (following the correct method;)) i can't update. it always aborts after checking out chinese po file. is anybody else having this issue?

po files are known to be problematic in terms of cvs conflicts. Some times --fix-cvs-conflicts flag can't deal with that.
Just remove the po directory that appears on error message and repeat the update should solve the issue.

good luck

Hi,
well, the "crude" method and gdebi missed those two because they are not dependencies of e17-cvs :)

libslang2-dev i don't know, i don't even have install it... maybe some sidux package add that one to it's dependency list...

linxine-dev i removed from the dependencies list, since the default compiled/installed packages don't need it. (I announce the removal some posts ago... 16 Nov)
It's only needed if, a posteriori, you decide to try some multimedia enlightenment app.
I must have copied the list i gave to you above from an old copy where it stills. Not a problem anyway, if you would not compile any multimedia stuff it will just be ignored.

Glad to know that it was compiling normally.

NOTE: by now ewl have an annoying bug, that make 1st. time compilation abort.
If that happen to you just repeat the above gdebi command. It should finish fine on second time.

No, cvs code it's downloaded only once.
Even if you remove and purge e17-cvs it will be there. A user must manually delete it if don't want it.
Don't forget to use version 0.0-4 (at least) to minimize downloaded code (less 44M).

Hope it finishes ok.

Check the 1st post for suggestion on how-to make launcher, tune menus and startup apps. check get-e for themes and other stuff. try to get some look you really like. Configuration Windows allow to tune a lot :)
Don't forget that you can have any number of shelves as you want and they can be transparent.
Post on doubts.

Dual monitors are always a little hard.
Did you get it work on other DE?
Most of the time the problem it's a xorg.conf and not an e17 specific.
The streach of the background depends on you have xinerama on/off and/or TwinView on/of. If you use nvidia driver try to use nvidia-settings to choose the best options (more easy that edit xorg.conf by hand)

My only issue with 2 monitors it's that the configuration did not preserve correctly from one monitor to 2 monitors. I had to config, from fresh, every time i pass from 1 -> 2 and from 2->1, cause the shelves change position and size in a weird way, instead of being linearly translated resized.
I end up doing a copy of ~/.e one for each situation.

(btw here my olds screenshots (http://ruialeixopais.planetaclix.pt/linux/) of e17 when i used 2 monitors.)

In this case i agree with you, the page it's very beutiful, but... it's not mine. I copied from www.enlightenment.org, because i haven't much more ideas at the time (almost 2 in morning and after update a bunch of links in several posts, i needed to make thinks easier when i update debs and want to get a thread quickly).
That page (the original) it's not much used, i thought it was a pity, so well designed, so i kinda "steal" it, for beauty too, but for identification of the method with the original product, i mean, spread the idea that this way of get e17 is not some twisted thing but an ordinary way of get that beautiful thing.

I am a little worried that my copy could not be much correct. If you think it's that the case, with the link on front page of LinuxCafe, we can make another one or change the look.

btw, about your screenshot (ey, thats an Oz OS!) i think i must make a version with better compatibility with 4:3 monitors.

Links to my screenshots: 1 (http://ruialeixopais.planetaclix.pt/linux/e17/oz1.jpg) 2 (http://ruialeixopais.planetaclix.pt/linux/e17/oz2.jpg) 3 (http://ruialeixopais.planetaclix.pt/linux/e17/oz3.jpg) 4 (http://ruialeixopais.planetaclix.pt/linux/e17/oz4.jpg) 5 (http://ruialeixopais.planetaclix.pt/linux/e17/oz5.jpg)

Ensure that you have SOFTWARE selected.

Help - please.

I liked E16 and I wanted the cool wallpaper for something to play with.

What have I done wrong?

Uhmm... on an old version of e17-cvs i made a bug on the posremove script... maybe you got that version.
Try install the last version first over it and after that retry the sudo aptitude purge.

Please post on failure or success so i can track down any possible issues.
Thanks,

EDIT:
ooops only now i saw your other post.
without reintall, you can try:
edit or make a file /etc/.easy_e17.conf
and make a line:

Then reinstall the latest deb (0.0-4), that will skip all packages on install and then it should allow apt/aptitude to purge.

hi rui,
i like your black emerald theme very much. there are just 2 things i'd llike to change and haven't found a way yet (i don't know if it's a problem of the theme or of the settings of e17 or its modules): the pop-ups on forecast and calendar are white on light grey, which is very difficult to read, and on my cheap laptop's screen impossible to read. and in the shelf1 application icons in ibar are faded and i can't change it (compare in screenshot icons in ibox to those in ibar).

Hi McDuff
Thanks for your comments on EmeralThem.
Yes, i'm still tunning and that is one that i have to change (or get back to default).
I change the original default because i didn't liked the original "outlined/sunken" look, but the plain white it's very annoying (even with good monitors).
I have change it in some places to black (Run window) and other to sunken (Config Window) but theres things to fix till it gets functional and consistent (try my previous BlackEmerald_r or my ctHulhain on one of the first posts to see if you get a look that would satisfy you more.

About the faded effect... It's that way it's suppose to be :(
I made this theme to ibar be used on transparent shelves (an idea i saw on an old elive screenshot...) you can try to change appearance from Inset to Plain (right click on shelf icons and choose Appeareance) to make it look better on a non transparent background.
If you really want icons w full density i can post what you need to change on code and you recompile your own version :)
(flexibility all time)

Hi, thats intentional.

Do you have e16 installed or have you tried another e17 install method on the past?

For the second case you need to remove any other version using apt/synaptic.

For the case you have e16, for the moment, you will need to go for the old manual method (check pdf at bottom of 1st. post)

Note that if you have already all dependencies satisfied (and if it's compiling you have) you can use dpkg instead of gdebi, that offer much more options, namely flags for overpass conflict packages or force installations...

The result is the same, the deb it's just to ensure simplicity on installation (and be able to set e17 a dependency of other packages)

Rui, you taking suggestions? I was just thinking that it would be cool if the ~/.easy_e17.conf file had a GUI which allowed you to choose which programs you wanted installed and runs the update script after you are done choosing. Also, does the package update your system automatically, cause I have a suspicion that I have to reinstall or something when I want to update it.

Hi,
yes i always accept suggestion and would like that threads on e17 would be essencialy users discussing, debating and suggest ideas on usability and workarounds for problems.

Before making the deb package, my idea was exactly that (i even had started a first sketch with zenity).
But sooner i realize that would collide with the main ideas that oriented this how-to/method.
My point is just to get a stable environment one should avoid play with available apps and modules. Just stick with a main core, and keep things flexible enough so if a user want to try more he/she can easily go at his/her own risk.

Make such a project would open the door to an endless possible number of combinations that would make it hard to help or support (it's in fact that is the problem of several threads on e17, people are always getting trouble because some app started to be buggy or not updated).

I prefer to take the other road, make installation as simple as possible and/by the reduce the number of things installed on first go. After that it's with e17 user...

If you want to make such an app, i can add a link or a reference as a posterior method for try/tweak an e install, but my main line is to keep at most stability for the first install.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion,
Rui

Somehow e17-cvs got stuck in my apt-get. I couldn't get rid of it nor could I install or remove any other packages using this cvs script.

To correct this issue I had to totally reinstall last night.

This should be tested more before you let it go in the forums.

Even telling people that maybe you should install it more than once is a sign that the script or the method for installing said software may need another course of installing than the one offered.

A zipped and compiled on my machine package is easy to delete if there are any problems.

Good luck if this works for you.

You reinstalled the all distro because of a broken package
Why? at worst scenario you could have deleted manually /opt/e17, /usr/bineasy_e17.sh and /etc/.easy_e17.conf and replace yours /var/lib/dpkg/available and /var/lib/dpkg/status by the available-old and status-old backups... (a procedure valid for all situations with difficult broken packages)

Nope, that has nothing to do neither with deb or the script. It's a bug on ewl code, on some config or makefile. Since it installs after 2 or 3 trials, seams to indicate some circular reference that luckily can be overpassed with repetition.
If you download the code by hand and compile you will get the same output and the same workaround would do.
I test a lot before i post updates. You may note that you are the first and only user till now that post with any serious grip (that you didn't solve because you rush to a reinstall).

Couldm't agree more with you on this. But thats exactly what this method do (or the deb package, it's the same thing, you can decompress the deb and check what it does).
It only don't download a zipped version because there is none (or the ones i found are months aged).
It downloads the code, compile in your machine to your arch and with your options and can easily be delete with rm since it installs all in one directory.
The manual method is always available on pdf format, too.

Thanks for your alert anyway,
Rui.

After an install (with less download code) it fails to mark to update main packages and libs, and only really updates modules. (Your systems may be now 2 days out-of-date ;) )

I updated the deb (http://ruialeixopais.planetaclix.pt/linux/e17/). New version do:
- Compile updates when they are available for *all* packages.
- Full compatibility with e16 on repos (thanks NullHead for point me that. You can update now with the deb, please post any issue you found.)
- More checks on distros/repos. It will abort now when install on elive or other distro with elives repos on, as long as that e17 version is installed.

Hi,
the issue i meant was this one (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3832592&postcount=326).
Your installation was prevented by the 'Conflicts' mechanism of apt, where i added enlightenment, among others, to prevent mix of installtions of e17 from several sources.
I'm not used to enlightenment (e16) and had forget that in repos it have the same name so it would collide.
Altough nothing prevents a user of have both installed... so i changed that.
Assuming that the enlightenment you have installed it's the e16 from ubuntu repos, you can safely now install e17-cvs.

The upgrade, yes, it's just download and install the deb package. Since you have e17 already installed it will make just an update of cvs (and the ewl bug should not appear, now that you have it compiled once)

Post on any issue,
Rui

i had the same problem. for anyone else with this error, this is what i did to solve it:

1. in the /var/lib/dpkg directory: i replaced "available", "diversions", "statoverride", and "status" with their "-old" counterparts
2.a. i deleted the following files: /var/e17-cvs.0.crash, /var/lib/dpkg/info/e17-cvs.conffiles, /var/lib/dpkg/info/e17-cvs.postinst, /var/lib/dpkg/info/e17-cvs.postrm and /var/lib/dpkg/info/e17-cvs.list

3. i ran "sudo apt-get update" followed by "sudo apt-get install -f"

Dual monitors are always a little hard.
Did you get it work on other DE?
Most of the time the problem it's a xorg.conf and not an e17 specific.
The streach of the background depends on you have xinerama on/off and/or TwinView on/of. If you use nvidia driver try to use nvidia-settings to choose the best options (more easy that edit xorg.conf by hand)

my problem isn't configuration of x. i have a working xinerama setting, and as you can see in my screenshot, it works in e17. it only doesn't recognize that there are two monitors and behaves as if it were one. when maximizing a window it gets maximized over both screens which isn't very useful. the other issue is that i can't change behaviour of backgroundimages. they will always be stretched.

Hi groggyboy,
thanks for your suggestions and tips.

First let me start by saying that those actions (direct action over /var/lib/dpkg) should be that with extreme caution and only when everything else fails!!!

Just a comment on something i believe you are not right. In that case specifically, I *can* do whatever i can for fix it.
I control the making of the deb and it's scripts, so i can solve any issue related with remove/purge actions.

But the point is that i can only do that with output from the user.
If people decide reinstall I can't do nothing about it, and i will never understand what the issue was...
Same goes for your step 2.a of your post. Delete the trouble makers would be of any help either, specially the file e17-cvs.postrm.

Of course problem could be something related with installation it self (aborted dpkg, interrupted process, overrided files...) in that case i will point to the procedure on your post, since, as i mentioned before, its the standard practice to any broken package.

Just a note, on your step 1., the only backups needed (the -old files) are for available and status. The others should not be touched, e17 install don't interact with them.

And before replace the files by the *-old versions, user should check if they wont contain e17-cvs references too or they will get the same problem. In that extreme and highly improbable case, I appreciate people ask what to do (i will not post here cause i don't like much references of playing around with those files).

Thanks for your report on the problem.

my problem isn't configuration of x. i have a working xinerama setting, and as you can see in my screenshot, it works in e17. it only doesn't recognize that there are two monitors and behaves as if it were one. when maximizing a window it gets maximized over both screens which isn't very useful. the other issue is that i can't change behaviour of backgroundimages. they will always be stretched.

Well thats, i think (i'm not an expert on xorg, nor twin monitors configs), it's the usual behaviour of xinerama. to get 2 desktops, instead of one stretched, you must turn xinerama off and twinview on.

the other issue is that i can't change behaviour of backgroundimages. they will always be stretched.

You can change this behavior in the Configuration > Wallpaper tool. Choose the wallpaper you want (using the picture button), and before you push ok, choose whether you want the picture to stretch, center, tile, fill all possible space while remaining the same shape (within) or to fill the screen with that wallpaper.

i have been trying this already but it always says it couldn't import the picture because of a conversion error.

Hi RM,
I've been very busy, only now i can answer you...
That you mention is not normal. Usually means that either you have an non-update module or even a broken one (non api compatible) listed.
try from a console (ctrl+F1) or another DE (no e17 session running):
mv ~/.e/e/config/default ~/.e/e/config/default_BAK
then login and check if add modules solves the issue.

good luck.

Can you change your 1st topic of your thread so it reflects the change to the new repo method.
Thanks for the previous correction (i have to answer there but not much time in hands right now :().
Anyway i hope that nows it settles down that way for a while. From now on all updates are just take care by apt mechanism (easier for me and users).

OzOS is basically a distro which will use E17 in a different manor by installing E17 from CVS and keeping it up to date through CVS.

neonl
November 27th, 2007, 03:06 PM
One nice trick to control start up apps is to make a script, make it executable and then create a .desktop for it like described above. That way you just run one startup "app" that can launch what ever you want and how you want and editable with any text editor. Here an example (start oofice quick launcher and numlockX):
#!/bin/sh
# <- this symbol makes the line just a comment, remove it to launch the app:
# gnome-settings-daemon &
ooffice -quickstart -nologo -nodefault &
numlockx on &
# gnome-volume-manager &
Controlling the look of Applications is another aspect that it's not obvious.
E17 Apps use controls/widgets from etk, but gtk apps don't know nothing about it. That means they will have the look (kind of ugly) of default gnome.
There are 2 ways of tweak this.
1st way, if you have gnome or xfce installed, is simply run the daemons of those environment, gnome-settings-daemon or xfce-mcs-manager respectively, on startup (like described above). That will set the theme we choose for gnome/xfce for all gtk apps, runs some basic services and start a few things like screensaver and numlockX. Appearence can then be tuned by running gnome-control-center or xfce-setting-show, according the daemon used.

Rui, I always used the "second" method of tweaking the GTK look, but now I wanted to try this one. I don't understand exactly what I have to do. Is it create a text file doingnano ~/.desktopand then writing#!/bin/sh
# <- this symbol makes the line just a comment, remove it to launch the app:
# gnome-settings-daemon &
ooffice -quickstart -nologo -nodefault &
numlockx on &
# gnome-volume-manager &saving and quiting, and then doingsudo chmod +x ~/.desktop?

EDIT: this one is solved, ovious solution I had to create a launcher and then select it to run @ startup.

Yes, Oz OS (http://cafelinux.org/forum/index.php/topic,907.0.html) will be centered on e17 compiled from cvs as main desktop and would use its metapackages to manage Ubuntu packages tunning for use with e17.

The main ideas is to be dynamic and flexible.
It will allow compile of e17 from cvs at anytime user wants, it will have a small iso, because it will only contains metapackages (that will access Ubuntu repos or Oz for tunned special ones).
And besides trying to offer a nice balanced set of apps to work with e17 (in 3 "flavors" of different levels of features), will take the use of metapackages a step further by offering at installation sets of "profile" for several typical uses (scientific, graphical/art work, multimedia, education/kids, etc.)
It will have the preferences of the users since installation, and pretends to make they life easier from the very beginning.
So it's target to anyone, except maybe users without Internet (but maybe we end up making extra isos with the debs needed...)

neonl, have you solved the issue of bad shelves with a new set of confs? or it's related with brakeage that smartboyathome mention?

Hi smartboyathome

easy_e17.sh, from deb version use it's own ,easy_e17.conf at /etc/.easy_e17.conf. You need to change that one.

hth.

@all,
i am testing a new update, that have a workaround for the ewl issue. So users don't need to care with repeating 2 or 3 times the command.

For the more purest that may be worried with taht workaround, thats nothing to do with compilation. Compile always finish fine.
The issue it's at install process. It use the already available edje (edje_cc) to create ewl theme and propagate it to default path.
Thats where it fails... apparently only a certain maximum of stuff can be "imported" and is been exceeded. Later (maybe ewl theme is growing in size) it needs 3 runs to complete install/propagate ewl data to /etc/opt.

I will move too the included theme to an extra optional package.
e17-cvs will have only that, e from cvs.

I'll just go back go my tests now.

You reinstalled the all distro because of a broken package

.

I unfortunately made the mistake of trying this on my production laptop and after not being able to find an answer fairly quickly after much Google-ing and forum searching, I needed to reinstall to make a Monday morning deadline.

I have a fair amount of downtime where I would like to play or look at something different, which is why I was wanting to try e17.

I think that e17 could become useful and I actually like the look and think I might like E-Gnome, but it will have to wait for some time in the future.

Good luck in the future.

Hi,
yes i put it on the package at last minute and didn't update the info about.
That CtHUlhulhain version it's my old theme that I used before Black Theme, see one of the first posts about themes on this thread....
I made a previous merge of Black theme ideas on it but then i preferred to tweak Black's theme to my preferences. :)

Since they are now independent of the e17-cvs and just optional i included too (theres a link somewhere to a zip with those...)

The Rusted version it's a tune for Oz OS that will be based on warm color tones, Australian nature colors, dark reds, greens... so i tried to warm up a bit the black theme:
51848
to see if it will match later the Oz look ;)
Here (http://cafelinux.org/forum/index.php/topic,885.msg2529.html#msg2529) some more.

Ok it's done.

Just write a file /etc/easy_e17-custom.conf with your --skip list (and any other option and run apt-get install e17-cvs.

To go back to default, just remove or move away your custom file and run again apt-get install e17-cvs. :)

Just as a side note, as long as you have e17 already install, apt-get install e17-cvs only do an update and will not reinstall all.

Hi,
Would a symlink from /etc/easy_e17-custom.conf to my ~/.easy_e17.conf file work?

No, i tried here and it needs to be a really file symlinks seems to generate an empty .easy_e17.conf file.

Also, would there be a way to have the package do that symlink automatically so people don't have to be root to edit it?

My first idea was to do exactly that... but the point it's exactly not have a file. A user that want to change default options should create his/her own file (at his/her own's risk).
This should be done only by experimented users!

My first idea was more or less the same that yours, but i want to keep things relatively safe and if that was implemented automatically, with the multitude of .conf files that may be already exist on e17 users of this method... the results would be very hard to predict.

That way, it stills very flexible, but requires user to make it's own file and use root powers. If somethings goes wrong, user knows what the problem is and can delete or check it's own file.

It's not working 100%, i need to implement default conf files in different way, so remove would in fact act if file changes (a deb specification issue that i forget).
It's done but i can't upload right now, because Cafelinux is raising it's security levels and I'm waiting for an extra password for make it visible to outside.
I let you know when it's available.

i noticed that there is a tiny bug in the default theme which you seem to be continuing in your new theme. temperature module doesn't indicate temperature and popups of forecast miss indication of place and day, popup of calendar misses indication of month. they are present in the older themes (screenshot included).
another bug, which however seems to be general to e17, is that e.g. gimp's splash screen doesn't show the custom theme's windowborders but the default theme's ones.

You can tune that from:
Configuration Panel -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Key Bindings

If it won't list key 'Print', press add key and follow instructions that appear on screen (tip: use Launch: Definied Command for simplicity).

You can set it to use scrot (use scrot -h for options) or another app from other DE. I use gnome screenshot that i like a lot.52180

To change to home directory, it is cd ~
Your home directory is /home/username

Actually, there's an even easier way to change to the home directory:

it only happens with your new black emerald and rusted emerald themes which you said are based on default theme, your old themes aren't concerned,
I have much more ideas on this one other then suggest a
sudo mv /opt/e17 /opt/e17_BKP
and do a full reinstall:
sudo easy_e17.sh -i
i don't think this would help, as i have currently four different installations running (including an oz-desktop), all showing this behaviour.
but if you still think a full reinstall could solve it, i'll try it this weekend and let you know what happened, just don't have enough time today.

Amigo Rui!

I have been looking everywhere for a solution to my prob with e17-cvs. I tryed to install it but i had an error due to a exml ( i guess ? ) i didnt bother much at the time since i was in a hurry, after i tryed a couple of other things and it failed, now, i was tryin to update my system and i cant because dpkg returns an error. there is something in this thread that is exaclty like mine, This is what it gives me when i do the -f ( fix-broken )

Removing e17-cvs ...
dpkg: error processing e17-cvs (--remove):
subprocess post-removal script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
e17-cvs
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

so i saw ur post above and thought that was a method to manually uninstall the e17, o i did it but i still cant update my system ( regular other updates, synaptic doesnt run anymore ). If you can please help me, i dont know much about linux yet, so general explanations i guess wont help me much. dough, i appreciate any kind of help just because i would like to keep my system updated, and maybe in the future when i understand more of what im doing, i can install e17 :D

Thx a lot, i appreciate :D

Fred

See this post, thats exactly what happens with me, but the -fix-broken does not work, neither using synaptics. :(
If you can please help me!

Fred

I Keep seeing videos of e17 and im amazed, if you can help me get it installed it would be awesome too, if not i'd be happy to have my update back :D
Again, i tryed to installed it but ./autogen.sh goes all around then stop saying that exml dependency was not met :(

Thx again
fred

Olá Fred :)

Sorry, i've been answering this too late...
Your problem can require a dirty trick but maybe it can be solved easily and without such things.
Lets try different ways, starting from the safest, till we get that issue solved.

First, do you download dome deb package or used CaféLinux repos?
Retry to install to see if it finishes now.
If you install from repos just do:
sudo aptitude reinstall e17-cvs
If you use a deb package do:
sudo dpkg -i e17-cvs_number_of_version_i_have.deb
replacing the number_of_version_i_have by the one you have.

EDIT please avoid mix version numbers. try to reinstall the same package that it's broken.

Post how it runs.
Another suggestion, if that fails,
Run synaptic and go 'Custom Filter' -> Broken and if e17-cvs is visible in that section double click on it (some times synaptic solve those issues better)

If that fails i'll tell you what remove manually and what files edit (the dangerous ones...)

Good luck

Uhmmm... very strange... i wonder what's the problem.
I will try to find. Don't reinstall then. It's definitly something related to my themes... did it happen on default (bling bling, the gold one) too?

As i said, i don't think it solves but you can try... (since it's based on latest default one maybe it needs some properties from recent code that failled to update or so... sounds very unlikely, but i don't understand too why this don't happen here. I'm confused.)

I'll let you know if i can find the problem.

lol, it's the first time that default theme it's giving problems that old themes don't have.

Do you mind to try to update from fresh (completely, clean both /opt/e17 and ~/.e17_cvs folders...). But at least seems to be something related to new theme, not mine specific.
Maybe something it's linking against some old or something that fail to update...

If you still have issues i will revert to old Black theme base.

BTW, (@ALL) I'm having problems right now compiling evas... so if you don'0t have time maybe wait some time would be a good idea.
Seems that evas require now an extra dependency and even when satisfied it stills fails here... i'll see if it gets updated or it may need more extra deb packages.

Vamos denovo amigo!

Ok, here is what goes on:

I dont quite remeber from where i installed cuz i was in a hurry.
researching, i could not find a .deb downloaded in my system that would match a installation file for e17, neither i have repos in my apt source file .... desculpe ...
Well, so aptitude reinstall did not work, remove still does not work, e17 does not show inside broken on synaptic, i did tried to remove from synaptic manager but unsuccessfull too.
Only thing my research found is that the version i have is 0.4-1.0, that i found on synaptic pack manager.
Well, i dont know if i did right but i added the :

## E17 Repository "e17.dunnewind.net"
deb http://e17.dunnewind.net/ubuntu feisty e17
deb-src http://e17.dunnewind.net/ubuntu feisty e17

Repo in my source.list and i did: apt-get install e17
Buttttttttt, it downloaded everything and marked e17-cvs to be uninstalled but again, it failed. So, im so lost ( o brasileiro ta perdido :(

Ok vamos com calma então.

The 1st thing is comment/delete that repo from your sources.list.
Don't mix repos of e17. It's the 1st ticked to get deep troubles and misterious bugs. Some repos install libs on /usr/libs oothers on /usr/local/libs, others on /opt/e17/libs soon they start to mix each other with different versions... No. avoid that like the plague!

Are you sure that the broken version is e17-cvs? (note that the name is e17-cvs, not e17 or enlightenment)
If thats the case the version should be 0.0-4.1.
I would advise to download it again from here (http://ruialeixopais.planetaclix.pt/linux/e17/e17-cvs_0.0-4.1_all.deb). and run:
sudo dpkg -i e17-cvs_0.0-4.1_all.deb
if code stops at ewl package repeat the above command 2 or 3 times till it continues (that version may not contain a later workaround for that issue).

lets see if that solves.
If not we clean all by hand.

Boa sorte

Hey Good!!

I'm very happy it's working.
Those problems that sometimes, luckily on rare occasions, appear are the weak part of this method...
I'm glad it's solved and you have time a patience to persists a little (and you even managed to do it without touch anything on dpkg confs!)

You may now give a look at 1st post to see how to update to use our repos (much easier and simple) and get the latest script versions.

Don't forget that to try another method of install e17 (other repos besides cafelinux ones) you should do an aptitude purge to complete remove installed one (not very useful now that you have e isntalled and running ;)).

So, now that i have a fully installed e17 i might keep it for a bit so i can get used to it first, but thanks. Just to clarify, if i want to follow ur 1st post to get e17 from the repos, by adding the repo to apt source and installing it from there, i have to uninstall ( purge? ) my cvs version and install with the apt right ?
In a near future, if what i said above its correct, ill do that. But im wondering, arent they compatible ? i mean, can i just add the repo and install ( upgrade ) on top of my version so ill get the updated one ?

I might wait a bit before updating it anyway , i mean, more until like bigger changes happen to it. I really just want to play with it now :D

Olá de novo Fred.

No problem, the repos on the 1st post are fully compatible with your actual installation.
When i say mixing repos, means add other then those repos when e17 is installed by these method.

It will not reinstall all. It will only update the script version and recompile any e17 app, lib or module that meanwhile had any update on cvs server.
It will make updates and any uninstall of e17-cvs much easier :)

Oops, i had answer an identical question on another thread and almost forget this issue here...

The issue was the format
font: "Sans:style=Bold,Edje-Vera-Bold"
on themes (old font: "Edje-Vera-Bold" worked) and other issues related with fonts (disappearing legend on some modules and conf windows).

The problem was some new way, i think, of dealing with system fonts that required a new dependency libfontconfig1-dev and a recompilation of some e libs against it.

Installing from the repo doesn't work - there are unresolved dependencies (Feisty):
e17-cvs:
Depends: libsqlite3-dev but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libpam0g-dev but it is not going to be installed

When manually installing the packages, the following errors occur:
libsqlite3-dev:
Depends: libsqlite3-0 (=3.3.13-0ubuntu1) but 3.3.13-1alex is to be installed

libpam0g-dev:
Depends: libpam0g (=0.79-4ubuntu2) but 0.79-4ubuntu2uk1 is to be installed

So, is this a problem with the repo, or just me?

ĩ think there is a dependency issue due to a version conflict since your not using the last version of Ubuntu.

Not automatix, however I do have a bunch of custom repo's.

## Moblock Repo
# deb http://moblock-deb.sourceforge.net/debian feisty main
# deb-src http://moblock-deb.sourceforge.net/debian feisty main

## Ubuntu Ultimate Repo
# deb http://repoubuntusoftware.info/ feisty all

## Repo purely for Thunderbird 2
# deb http://ubuntu.iuculano.it feisty thunderbird
# deb-src http://ubuntu.iuculano.it feisty thunderbird

#Innotek repos or VirtualBox
# deb http://www.virtualbox.org/debian feisty non-free

deb http://cafelinux.org/Downloads/oz-os tinwoodman main contrib

To expound:
Moblock is purely for the Moblock IP filter.
Virtualbox is purely for the Virtualbox virtualisation software. I find it easier to use than VMWare, which often segfaults on my system.
Cafelinux is yours
Ultimate is the repo for the customised distribution formerly known as Ubuntu Ultimate, a project led by the fellow here known as TheeMan. I've used it exclusively for games.

I have also in the past used medibuntu for a few things, however for some reason that I forget, I've removed from my current sources list.

Again, I have also used Trevhino's repo, mainly from an attempt to get compiz working (it failed)

I doubt that you will be able to reproduce it.

Delving into the dependencies (no wonder they called it hell), the "libsqlite3-0" package is not removable - removing it will remove 142+ applications, including such gems as gconf.... The "libpam0g" package does the same.

So it looks like a problem with my particular installation / combination of software packages.

well the repos on your previous post are commented, so they shouldn't be in use. But you may have used and one of them could changed those packages... maybe if you enable them again they have a limpam0-dev compatible... dont know.

You can try to use synaptic or dpkg to force to go to a specific version and after that try to solve eventual breakage of dependent package... but thats a situation with unpredictable results. I would not advise to do that.

libpam may be avoided (it will only prevent you lock screen from e17)
try to follow the manual procedure, described here (http://cafelinux.org/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=881.0;attach=2449) and remove libpam0-dev from the list of aptitude install on step 1 of the how-to.

Cheers. It seems to have worked.

I've also downgraded from my odd versions back to the standard repo ones, so it may be interesting to see what broke. Personally, I think that the odd version came from when I was messing around with Compiz, trying to get it to work.

"Your X Display Server is missing support for Xrander (X Resize and Rotate) extension. You cannot change the screen resolutions without the support of this extension. It could also be possible that at the time ecore was built, there was no Xrandr support detected."

Of course, Xrandr is installed and confirmed by apt as the latest version. Just wondering if there's a quick fix? Thanks.

I also used a work around posted by the same user.

Thanks for the response, Rui Pais, but I was able to change the resolution perfectly in Gnome, which is why it was a bit confusing. Edit: Using a workaround. Edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf and removed the resolutions higher than 1024x768 (after backing up the original xorg.conf). That allows me to boot into and run at my desired resolution, but of course does not really answer what went wrong.

Another problem that I am having is that I cannot find all of the options I had in gnome some of which are very important to me. For example I connect through wireless to the internet I dont know where to set this up. Currently I have to log in to a gnome session which auto connects me. Then I log out and log into E17 and I can get on the internet.

This is just one example of things another one would be VPN which i use frequently but at any rate can anyone point me in the right direction?

I installed a command line system from the 7.10 alternate cd. After updating I installed xorg and xdm.

I then added the CafeLinux repo and installed E17 cvs following the latest instructions on page 1 of the thread. Received a successful install message.

Next step was sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg Followed by sudo /etc/init.d/xdm start Output indicated xdm started but system stayed in console, so I entered startx Xserver failed to "connect", said it couldn't find the "font path"

I tried reinstalling e17 a couple times, removing xdm and installing gdm, and another xorg reconfigure, always with the same result.

I've searched thru the thread and several other places both in and out of the forums but my limited knowledge hasn't yielded any solutions to me so I decided to start over and ask for help.

I've also read thru the pdf of the original instructions and didn't spot anything helpful to my situation.

I now have a clean command line install with only xorg and xdm added and no configuration done yet.

It does appear that most people posting in this thread already had a complete GUI system installed and simply added E17 to it so that could be where I'm missing a step.

I realize my problem may not be related directly to E17 so if someone could direct me to something I missed in another thread, etc. I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
about the xorgconf, thats not a workaround. It's a fix of a bad config. Regrettably graphic cards/monitor detection and xorg auto configuration still have a lot of issues.

I'm sorry to say that about your wireless issues i can't help much. I don't have wireless so i never get those problems or have any way of test. There is an e17 specific app for that (not on main cvs) i will search for the name and tell you. And i will try to get help from other people to give you some tips.
If someone here on this thread have some tips on this, please don't be shy...

On VPN, can you tell me how or what do you on gnome to get VPN? (i never used VPN)

About the link you point, it's a very old how-to... if you have experience with both environment you can use it and adapted for any new stuff, other wise i would advise to avoid it (EDIT: AND if you decide by give a try YOU MUST DELETE ALL FROM THIS METHOD. Don't mix this with pre-compiled stuff from other repos or you get troubles). If you want a mix of those environment i would advise you to give an eye to Geubuntu, that may offer more or less the same, updated, and with less trouble.
But i don't know if that would solve your specific issues...

Hi RRS,
yes all this method presumes that you have an Login Manager (like GDM/KDM) i'm not much experienced with plain XDM.
You may need to edit some conf file... but first try to create a file:
~/.xsession
with one line:
exec /opt/e17/bin/enlightenment_start
And then link it with:
ln -s ~/.xsession ~/.xinitrc
That should your startx work with e17.

Post your results since they may be useful for other users too.
Thanks,
Rui

Cheers. It seems to have worked.

I've also downgraded from my odd versions back to the standard repo ones, so it may be interesting to see what broke. Personally, I think that the odd version came from when I was messing around with Compiz, trying to get it to work.

Glad it's working! :)
Hope you got all dependencies solved by now. I would suspect more of Ultimate repo, but didn't check myself (browse the repos on-line should give the answer...)

@all
I updated the repos last night.
Last version 0.0-4.4.2 highlights:
- Much better PATH dealing
- Remove of old hacks relate with PATH (should have done this a long time ago...)
- Avoid aborted installation on minimal installs where some paths related with default sessions may be missing.
- Blocks installation on Geubuntu installs (Geubuntu will block this method, too. Cooperation it's good!)
- User can install only scripts and confs, skipping compilation by previously creating an empty file ''~/_skip_easy_e17_install"
- e17-themes is lighter now.
- I made an e17-themes-extra for my tunes ctHulhain and eventually others that may be made on Oz context)

Hi again,
about wireless.
The enlightenment app that deals with wireless to e17 it's exalt.
It's not in the main cvs. It seems to be a little buggy, and i've been told that it has issues with preserving passwords fro connections...

Another app that people seems to prefer it's the generic Wicd.
Check here for this subject and a deb package:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=473331

About exalt, if you want to try it, you can get it here:
http://watchwolf.fr/wiki/doku.php?id=exalt.
In order to compile you need to add to your .bashrc:
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/opt/e17/lib/pkgconfig
to compile (check order, it's important).
I made packages compatible with e17-cvs, but exalt module always crash when i tried to access configurations...

By the way Rui, I use WICD with E17 and found it integrates nicely. Just add the net module, right click it > configuration, and set Launch Application On Double-Click to /opt/wicd/gui.py. This will pull WICD's GUI up for you. I would say that WICD should be packaged with Oz as well. ;)

Thanks a lot for the tip on wicd configuration.

Yes, wicd seems a good option to Oz too.
I played a little with exalt and seems unstable too much instable for now (and packaging it's boring, demanding 5 debs and one must be tunes for the starting daemon, defaults only offer a gentoo version...)

Thanks for the info I will give another utility a try.

Is it that I should be using other apps instead of gnome apps and utilities. For instance I notice the user manager that adds and removes users in gnome is no where to be found as well. Is this because it is part of gnome and I am no longer using gnome. Thus I should find another app that is for the same thing?

Another thing that is bugging me is that many icons dont have any ... well icons i guess. It is just the name of the item and no Icon. How can I fix this?

I have heard that E alone is not enough to have. I guess because it is a WM and not a DE. But it seems to me that you should be able to do just about anything. Am I wrong here? Will I be missing some special functionality that I will need if I am not using a DE (Gnome)?

I would Like to have a bar at the botom of the screen with my programs in it that functions like the apple OS bar where when I hover over the icons they get bigger and mover around and such. I saw this on an E demo on you tube I think How can I get that effect.

and last but not least, Thank You so much for all the help to everyone here at the forums. It is the best forum I have ever been on. The people are very helpful and response times fast. I could not leave Vista without you all!

You need to add the Applications using the Configuration Panel. Or you can be lazy like me and just type in the name in the Run module to get it. :lolflag:

Well as long as you like or are used to an app, i see no reson for stop using it (i'm completly against certain positions for pure DEs from fundamentalist users, and in relation to e17 even more since most of it's apps are very young, incomplete and buggy).
If apps don't have an entry on menus you can make one like smartboyathome said before. See mt 1st post too for some tips on create app launchers/menu entries. (The one you mention it's called users-admin).

Another thing that is bugging me is that many icons dont have any ... well icons i guess. It is just the name of the item and no Icon. How can I fix this?
Same thing as above. Run the app from menu right click on default icon and choose Edit icon set what you like.

No e it's not a pure WM nor a full DE (something in between), but the reason that it don't have all functionality it's because no one care yet to make it or the ones available are too buggy to be used (i cut a lot of them with this method because of that).
But again nothing should prevent you from using tools from independent sources or from other DEs. This is Linux and all it's GPL or at least free of use. :)

I would Like to have a bar at the botom of the screen with my programs in it that functions like the apple OS bar where when I hover over the icons they get bigger and mover around and such. I saw this on an E demo on you tube I think How can I get that effect.

That it's get with ibar module.
The specific animation you refer it's theme related. It's implemented on some thmes. Intall the ones on www.get-e.org and see the one that gives what you like.
You can use the Advanced properties of theme selector (Configuration panel > Appearence > Themes > Advanced) that allow to set a theme for all e17 and another one for module/ibar
(or any other e17 element, e17 it's highly flexible :))

How can I know what the name of a particular app is, or more importantly the command to launch it in the terminal. To a windows user it seems you all just know, lol. But is there a way for us mere mortals to know. In windows I would have done something like launch the program and then the task manager and see what process is actualy running. Is there a similar method?

You can launch it in the run box (type in the name of the program and you should get it), and then open the run box again and this time push the up arrow and you should get a list of recently used commands (with the most recent, i.e. your program, at the bottom).

Hi smartboyathome,
you mean ibox? Yes thats what a call a nice feature () it's just the way e do it. There is no plan to implement Gnome features or way of doing things...
For me, i always hated the gey panels wasting space of gnome/kde/windows that get full of strange boxs replicating the name of open windows (that i'm already look at...)
I prefer a clean look. I always set ibox transparent on a shelf and that way it only became "apparent" when i minimize something. I use a big pager (pager are so cool and discrete on e17) where apps appeara represented by it's size and icon that i used to change apps/desktop...

It's all just a question of habit and use the best way what each environment has to offer, imho.

Another way to know the name of binaries (besides the one smartboyathome explained) it's either check how the launcher on gnome menus implemented or open synaptic and check what each app have saved on /usr/bin/ using the 'Installed Files' tab of properties.

BTW, yet another way of tunning icons on menus (on a previous of yours) it's:
Configuration Panel > Appearance > Icon Themes

It allow to change menu icons according to icon themes (gtk) you may have installed. Some are more complete then others (or may fit e look better)

Was busier then I thought I'd be this last week but finally got a chance to try your suggestions from post 434.

Unfortunately creating the file and link made no difference so I started rechecking my notes and steps again.

Since the xsession errors made no mention of e17 or xdm I decided to reinstall xorg, even though the originall installation and configuration steps had appeared to go ok.

I'd originally used:sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-i810to avoid all the uneeded drivers.

To reinstall I used:sudo aptitude install xorg
Expecting to see all the missing drivers along with whatever else may not have been installed the first time, I was surprised that only a few additional items were installed. Among them was the xfonts packages so that apparently was my problem from the beginning!

This time "startx" brought up a fully functional Enlightenment desktop :)
Still gotta install some programs though to turn "functional" into "usefull" :)

A reboot brought up the XDM login screen which to then took me straight to the desktop so that all works as well too now.

I don't know if the xsession file and link you suggested are still needed but I plan to leave them just in case.

BTW, the reason I installed this way was to re-invigorate an old Dell.
900MH Celeron, 192 MB of ram, and a 10G hard drive.

Thanks again.

Thank you for the reply. No moblock/peerguardian or the like here, and I'm just using the default iptables. But if it's probably connectivity I'll pour over the router settings / reset it in case and report back...

@ smartboy@home: for reasons unknown to me, I reset the router and it worked... either that or there was a problem server side and it was fixed since I last tried... anyways I'm now clued in as to associating that with connectivity ;) Going ahead and giving this e17 a try.

This does raise a question. If I may ask, how may someone stop an install in progress without dpkg "hanging up" on that job? Using this e17 installation for example. If dpkg is still waiting in this script for e17 from cvs, how could you "kill" it and move on to install something else instead? Say you use dial up and your connection bites the dust half way in, the job just isn't going to finish, so you'd rather cancel this transfer and installation of e17 and get xfce from a xubuntu CD.

Sorry about that dpkg issue. In order to get your dpkg back to order you need to fish e17-cvs first. You can remove it later if you don't like it.
When dpkg hangs on a package generally it needs to finish that installation in order to go back to normality.
You can try to do an sudo apt-get install -f and see if that fix it, but i doubt it that it will work if script was already running...

You can make it faster by doing:
touch _skip_easy_e17_install
before:
apt-get install e17_cvs

After finish dpkg correctly you can then finish the installation;
sudo easy_e17.sh -i
or remove/clean all you your don't want it:
sudo easy_e17.sh -c -c -c
sudo apt-get remove --purge e17-cvs

Meanwhile, my only suggestion would be doing the old manual way (this deb it's just a wrapper for that anyway...)
Just make the replace you want on 1st step of the procedure.

Check the pdf version here, for a detailed how-to:
http://cafelinux.org/forum/index.php/topic,881.0.html

Hope that help.

thanks for the response & for being willing to get it working on hardy.

i've been itching to try this wm since this morning when a friend told me about it. it is rather appealing cuz i have a 4 year old pc with minor hardware upgrades, so its outdated...
any way, i wanna try it but i want to use the latest version not the version in the official ubuntu repo. (0.16.x).

sorry for the double post, but i have an update/clarification about the issue on hardy...
apparently libgif4 & libungif4 conflict. as i said, a lot of kde4 packages used to depend on libungif4 but they are transitioning the kde4 packages (for kubuntu at least) to depend on libgif4 instead...
so that means having packages installed that depend on libgif4 will prevent one from being able to install e17 cuz of e17's dependency on libungif4-dev.

OK I'm wondering about what this means. I understand the code, but it's what you said after that confused me.

sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://cafelinux.org/Downloads/oz-os tinwoodman main contrib' >> /etc/apt/sources.list"

Please if you have any link to this method, please update it as soon as possible. Many Thanks. are you looking for another method of putting the URL into the sources.list? because you could always use this. echo 'deb http://cafelinux.org/Downloads/oz-os tinwoodman main contrib' | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

Also I can test you're repository and .deb in Debian Testing Lenny if you would like.

I NullHead.
The confusion from my quote arose because this method had evolved to the present one in 3 different stages. A manual method, a single deb package and now, a repository.
My reference to "other method" was the references for the deb packages that required that i keep update a bunch of links on several forums every time i updated... and some people who link to deb sooner had they links obsolete too...

Of course your suggestion for add the cafelinux repos to source.list works too, but my point was not get a different method to do that (just want to add some tip for users who prefer not to do the edit by hand).

Thanks, for the offer of test on Lenny. I'm always willing to see if how it works on other distros.
If you try it, please let me know how it goes.

Thanks Rui

Hello everyone! I've got a quick questions regarding the install/upgrade process.

During the install (and I tried upgrading) some libraries were "skipped." In fact quite a few, for example, eet, evas, ecore, and so on. What does that mean? WHy was it skipped? Is it needed? Anyway I can install them? The list of "skipped" libraries is quite long. Is this the reason why I cannot use some apps or configure some stuff like entrance themes, etc?

Hi,
yes the install process it's suppose to skip several apps, but not the ones you mention (eet, ecore...)
Did it skip them when install or only when update?
Can you login to enlightenment?

The reason why there are stuff skipped it's because they are not much stable or maintainned anymore.
But you can still install them anyway... Check the 1st post for instructions on how to do it...

Yes, I was able to log into enlightenment. Infact, I've been using it for about a day now. I can't remember now if those apps/libs I mentioned were skipped during the initial install. I can tell you though that I don't have any of the enlightenment apps (picture viewer, media player, etc...). A few more questions:

Has anyone got suspend/hibernate working on a laptop when the lid is closed? It works when clicking the suspend/hibernate options but not when closing the lid. I guess it's something I could live with.

Does anyone have any suggestions for firefox themes? I guess it makes sense that GNOME apps aren't affected by the selected e17 theme.

How does one change the entrance theme? There doesn't seem to be an option under configuration.

WICD works well with this by the way.

EDIT: I just re read the original post regarding gtk themes at startup. This solved the whole firefox thing. Is it possible to get suspend when laptop lid is closed the same way? I'll give it a shot.

Ah, ok. Thats the normal behavior. The purpose here it's to get a stable core that can be used with other software more mature and that users may be more used (from other DEs).
But you can get those apps (the ones you refer are quite stable theses days, i think) by editing the file /etc/.easy_e17.conf and remove the names of the wanted apps from --skip list. After that just do:
sudo easy_e17.sh --only=<eapp_name>
or for a safer option:
sudo easy_e17.sh -i
to make sure any lib and app it's compiled again.

About the laptop lid i don't know any e17 method/application specific to do that (but maybe exist...) I use gnome-power-manager launched at enlightenment startup and gnome-power-preferences to tune behavior. Maybe it sounds a little overwhelming but it don't have too much gnome dependencies and works quite well.

About entrance... thats one of the set of buggy and sometimes keep long periods broken and not update. It miss some basic functionality like XDMCP and it's hard to configure under Ubuntu (i only made it work once and after a reboot it spots mysteriously... and read that people at geubuntu are getting problems to make net work when entrance is used...)
But you can try it with the same process above and check how its development goes.

Thanks for give e17-cvs a try :)
Rui.

Thanks a lot for the help and thanks for the "how to." Without it I would still be using gnome. I did manage to get the lid working once "gnome-control-center" was running. So I guess what I would really need is gnome-power-manager. I will do some more testing to confirm weather or not gnome-control-center at startup will do.

No problem, glad i can help :)

gnome-control-center, when runs from other DE other then gnome, launches several services from gnome, among them gnome-power-manager, gnome-settings-daemon and gnome-screensaver (if installed).
Set any of those to run by hand make a better fine tunning of startup and lighter resources.

Personally, i always run gnome-power-manager and gnome-settings-daemon, this late solves the gtk look without any need of a .gtkrc-2.0 file and with the extras better tools for tweak gtk look and automatic numlockx on at startup :)

i had the same problem. for anyone else with this error, this is what i did to solve it:

1. in the /var/lib/dpkg directory: i replaced "available", "diversions", "statoverride", and "status" with their "-old" counterparts
2.a. i deleted the following files: /var/e17-cvs.0.crash, /var/lib/dpkg/info/e17-cvs.conffiles, /var/lib/dpkg/info/e17-cvs.postinst, /var/lib/dpkg/info/e17-cvs.postrm and /var/lib/dpkg/info/e17-cvs.list
2.b. if you find any other files in /var/lib/dpkg and its subdirectories that contain the name "e17-cvs", delete them as well.
3. i ran "sudo apt-get update" followed by "sudo apt-get install -f"

this should fix things.

Had to cancel cvs download due :

* script not allowing me to defeer process to later time
* download from cvs server hammered our bandwidth.
* flatemates was running an instance(Hmek) in WoW , cvs download gave her 2000ms ping.

so i killled the cvs download. and this method allowed me to continue using apt-get before this debacle.

Hi,
sorry to hear about your problems.
Of course downloading code requires some bandwidth... but not that much (it's just a few Megs).
Maybe you hit a moment when server had problems or was under some kind of problems...

What i want to advise/reinforce:
** DO NOT USE THOSE COMMANDS UNLESS AS LAST RESOURCE **

Messing with those file can seriously broken your OS!

If that kind of problems appears, user should 1st. try to finish installation at a later time and after that remove with aptitude purge if not want to use it, or simply prevent the code donload/compilation do a:
touch _skip_easy_e17_install
and then redo the apt-get command.

Hi,
i have updated the e17-cvs package and e17-themes.

It's important that e17-cvs users update to this new version.
** DO NOT TRY TO UNINSTALL FIRST! **
This solves the issue that creates broken (non-uninstallable) e17-cvs when a remove was required.

The packages now includes by default emprint and screenshot and removes scrot as a needed dependency.

I remove too the workaround for old ewl problem, since here it compiles fine at first (lets hope problem it's solved for good).

To install under hardy with a kde installation you may need to first install manually libgif-dev (did'nt test myself)

e17-theme includes updates for pager to work with latest versions of e17.

Don't forget that we are still without Cafelinux repos so you must use the alternative repos.

Thanks.

for those who use e17-themes a simple update solves the problem.

for those that make they themes (brave souls) just decompress default edj (blingbling) and check differences of default_pager.edc

Sometimes keep thems update it's an hard job...
