View Full Version : Harsh word about Linux (not from me :))

I'm not taking sides here, I use them both, just thought this article about Theo de Raadt (developer of openBSD) thoughts and feelings about GNU/Linux was a little bit funny here and there :)
Linux has it's ups and downs as well as BSD.

Awww...someone's grumpy because no one's using his OS!
Lok Technologies, a San Jose, Calif.-based maker of networking gear, started out using Linux in its equipment but switched to OpenBSD four years ago after company founder Simon Lok, who holds a doctorate in computer science, took a close look at the Linux source code.
"You know what I found? Right in the kernel, in the heart of the operating system, I found a developer's comment that said, 'Does this belong here?' "Lok says. "What kind of confidence does that inspire? Right then I knew it was time to switch."
Am I the only one who thinks that's a good thing? Seems to me the developer was just indicating (s)he wasn't quite certain of something...as opposed to thinking (s)he knew everything. Uncertainty isn't a weakness. I'd rather see a developer who gets his or her work checked out by others if (s)he's uncertain rather than some arrogant fool who just (confidently) codes something wrong at the expense of functionality or security...

I read that awhile ago.
I say who cares. Aslong as your useing an Open Source operating system who really cares? If you use OpenBSD because you can't get Linux to do the things you want than switch to it. OBSD is the most secure OS in the world. Isn't it like 7 years and not 1 major security defect found in the default setup?

I'd love to see what the BSD guys can come up with to really compete on my desktop, which is not a server. But since it's not "there" yet (from what I've seen), I'll keep using Linux.
Seriously, this is how the world works. People love to become software evangelists, but don't expect them to chime in with you if you can't show them a good, working alternative.
Stop whining about the sour card you've been dealt and do something about it, De Raadt.

This is really old news. Personally I think fights between linux and bsd are very counterproductive and it best to ignore the "yellow" Forbes FUDmeister....

I've already read that somewhere, I think either here or on LQ. One of the mods even said that the 'does this belong here' quote is in the BSD kernel as well :)

agreed. when a windows user reads something like this, they get the wrong idea about linux, and either stay with windows or go to bsd. if they do decide to go the bsd route, theyll be screaming for billy within 5 minutes. it accomplishes nothing to write crap about your "competitors" when 98% of people on earth are incapable of using your product. if bsd was more userfriendly and desktop oriented, i wouldnt mind using it. but whats hte point when linux is easier and works great?

I agree that the trashing that Raad did was pretty dumb and I use both OS (not openBSD though) and as I said before both has up's and down's, but I agree taht, that kind of talk doesn't do anyone any good, just thought his comments sounded funny :).
For those who don't believe that BSD's can be good at desktops, they can't easily be that yet but 2 projects is evolving rapidly, desktopBSD and PC-BSD both is trying to make the install of the OS and apps much easier on a BSD desktop, not in a similar way though, I won't (if ever) break my Kubuntu yet cause both are just at a beta stage now, but maybe something for the future.
It wasn't my meaning to offend anyone with my previous post, as I said I just thought the article fun to read.
