View Full Version : What are you playing right now on Ubuntu?

Just wondered what games people are in to playing on Ubuntu right now, plus a little description and link. It might give others ideas of what to play if they see something they like, and goes to show that there's plenty of games to play on Ubuntu!

Me:

Battle for Wesnoth
Fantasy turn-based strategy. It's very professionally made, a huge amount of fun especially in multiplayer with friends, and has countless maps, scenarios and campaigns produced by the community collected in an add-on server.
www.wesnoth.org

Scorched 3D
Turn-based strategy similar to Worms and Scorched Earth. Great graphics, multiplayer, and the apocalypse mod that I have just discovered for some proper destruction!
www.scorched3d.co.uk

Simutrans
Highly detailed transport simulation game like Transport Tycoon but with more realism in my opinion (passengers and mail have destinations for example)...freeware but should be going open source soon with the release of version 1.0. Lots and lots of community contribution in the form of graphics "paks".

Unlike previous Paradox Games, which either focused on exploration and colonization (Europa Universalis) or warfare (Hearts of Iron), Victoria focuses in internal management, covering the industrialization and social/political changes in a country. The game itself gives a lot of importance to the economy of a country, having a complex market system which is described as being one of the best economic simulators ever madehttp://www.paradoxplaza.com/images/Screens/Victoria/victoria5.jpg

My favorite games are

Bos Wars (http://www.boswars.org/) - A Starcraft like RTS game. Bos Wars is a futuristic real time strategy game (RTS) and it's Open SOurce. In a RTS game, the player has to combat his enemies while developing his war economy. The trick is to balance the effort put into building his economy and building an army to defend and attack the enemies. Can be download a deb at getdeb.net (http://www.getdeb.net/app.php?name=Bos+Wars)

Tremulous (http://tremulous.net/) - It is considered the best Open Source games by many. Tremulous is a free and open source team-based first-person shooter with RTS elements. ame play is similar to the Quake II mod Gloom and the Half-Life mod Natural Selection. The game features two teams, humans and aliens, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Currently, I'm playing DooM 2. On Nightmare. ;)

Generally, I don't play much PC games any more. Pretty much, I play Tetris, Mahjong, Shisen Zho, various Solitaire card games, and Doom. I do still play a few rogue-likes, such as ADOM, DoomRL, or Nethack and I keep a large number of old DOS games installed on the computer to play. Mostly RPGs.

I have installed natively:

Doom 3
Neverwinter nights
Return to castle Wolfenstein
Postal 2
Tremulous
AstroMenace
Bos wars
Nexuiz

I have installed though Wine:

Grand theft auto 2
Star wars Republic commando
Splinter Cell (Only works with wine 0.9.44 for some unknown reason)
Scratches
Silent hill 4 (its very unstable)
Star trek Elite Force 2
Halo ( Works with wine 0.9.42)

I have installed though Cedega:

Call of Duty
Dungeon Siege
Grand theft Auto
Grand theft Auto Vice city
Grand theft Auto III
Grand theft Auto San Andreas
Heroes 3 complete
Medal of Honor Pacific Assault (Run the installer though wine, the game works)
Midnight Club 2 (No sound)
Might and Magic 7
Silent hill 2
Star trek Elite Force
Star Wars Galatic Battlegrounds
Star Wars Jedi Academy
Star Wars Jedi Outcast
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2
The moon Project

And I play PS1 games on EPSXE.I obviously don't have time to play ever single one of the above games so I mostly just play Postal 2 and GTA3 though cedega.Nexuiz is a very addictive game but the new 2.3 version for some reason can't be installed though the Synaptic Package Manager.Plus the new version seemed slower then the last to me but I might be wrong. There was another native Linux game I found that was a FPS but I can't remember the name of it.I had to reinstall Ubuntu about month ago so I lost the installer for it (it was a .deb file).

My sister plays it all the time, that's one reason why she keeps asking me to use my laptop with Ubuntu instead of my parents' computer with Windows. (she also likes Compiz)

I have to admit I have been playing more on the PSP and the DS lately, since it's nice to get away from a computer every so often. Computer, for me, frequently means "work". :)

When I do play on the PC, it's usually play Quake Wars (love the FieldOps), NWN (the Infinite Dungeons premium module), Battle for Wesnoth, Shredder/PyChess, or Gnome Mahjongg.

I plan on buying Ankh 2 and X3 (current release date is March), since both have Linux versions. I already have X3 for Windows, but I haven't had a Windows PC in quite time, so I'm actually happy that the game is finally released for Linux, too. :)

There's a native Linux version of SC3K. Not that hard to find a torrent of it, which I consider legal if you have the Windows version (I do).
Here's a guide to make it work with newer kernels: http://bashu.wordpress.com/2007/04/15/simcity-3000-on-ubuntu-edgy/

Also, if you want SimCity 4: http://www.amazon.com/Electronic-Arts-SimCity-Deluxe-Edition/dp/B0000C0YW2/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1203896001&sr=8-1
