I recently switched from Fedora to Ubuntu. With Fedora I was playing the chess game located here: http://www.steviedisco.co.uk/ as it was in the yum repositories. It is not in the Ubuntu repositories, and I cant get it to install from source...well more accurately, I havent got a clue how to do it from source. The whole ./configure, make, make install doesnt work as the files necessary for that to work are not included with the source.

So I have been looking for another chess program, preferably 3d, to play. Ive got Brutal Chess and pouet chess. The problem I have with those, is that even on the easiest settings, it's like playing a 50 year old Russian thats been playing the game since he was 2. The computer NEVER makes a mistake, and being a human I can't compete with that.

And it's not that I'm a terrible chess player...I came in 2nd in our Senior chess club tournament, and that was 20 years ago. So anyway, if someone could assist me in installing the chess game I had in Fedora, or point me to one that has a .deb package that is actually beatable at least once every 50 games I would be most grateful. The point of a game is to have fun, not get so frustrated you want to stab your lcd monitor and watch it 'bleed', however satisfying that may be. ;)

PS...GLChess gave me an error when I tried to install it. I'm ok with Linux, but not a power user or anything. If something doesnt work the way its supposed to Im not very good at figuring out why.

Personally I like DreamChess: http://www.dreamchess.org/home.html
I believe it has debian/ubuntu packages. And it looks nice to boot: http://www.dreamchess.org/screenshots.html

And I've beaten the CPU so it can't be too terribly bad. ^_^

**edit oops, packages aren't on their site, however you can get them from GetDeb.net (http://www.getdeb.net) on this page: http://www.getdeb.net/app.php?name=DreamChess
