Trying to turn off compiz before running my games. I run metacity --replace adn the comptuer immediately locks up.
I have to cycle power to get back. any ideas?

That's strange. Normally its when people try to run compiz that they encounter lock ups.
I wouldn't know exactly, but you might wanna check if you have metacity installed properly. Maybe some package got screwed up while installing Compiz Fusion.
you can also install fusion-icon( the deb is floating around somewhere in this forum), which enables you to easily switch between metacity and compiz.

I'll try that fusion icon tonite. Is it possible to reload metacity if that doesn't work?

I wouldn't know. It works for me. I do get an error - that I dont rbr exactly - but its no big deal. I just press Ctrl + C to get my prompt back

well bummer. I got the fusion-icon loaded. When I try to start it I locked up again.
Any ideas?

I'm in KDE on Feisty, and when I use the fusion-icon to switch from Compiz to Kwin, my desktop locks up as well and I have to do a hard shut down. Using Compiz Fusion from the Trevino Repo on a Dell Inspiron 9300 w/ GeForce Go 6800 on nVidia's drivers.

Are you starting it from the terminal or from the run dialog (Alt + F2)
There might be some other issue too. Check to see if your metacity and compiz-fusion packages have been cleanly installed.

also how do I check for clean installs?
