ATI has stepped up the next release of linux drivers for this month which will release soon known as 8.41.2. The drivers have shown up to 50% improvement from last drivers which is a HUGE step up. ATI is finally listening to linux users and starting to give ATI users their money's worth. Can't wait for the drivers... :):):) :guitar:

Sometime this month. They are released each month. 8.40 is august so im going to take a wild aim and guess around the 15th they should be released. I'll post when they are up for sure though.

I wonder if Dell's call for better ATI drivers had anything to do with this? Great news for all our suffering ATI users, though. Now if only the Intel drivers would follow suit...

i installed the fglrx drivers for the first time yesterday, and i was appauled. so incredibly buggy, it crashed almost every 5 minutes. if this is as stable as the open source driver, with the added speed. then woah.

New drivers not always a good thing , I do not mean to put a damper on things as it seems any new drivers for nix is a good thing . For windows I have had to revert back to older drivers for 30-40% increase in performance and also the stability aspect. Was the same for both 32 bit and 64 bit XP Pro. Lets hope they don't follow suit with the nix drivers . :)

You've obviously never tried to setup/use their drivers on an ATI card.
It CAN'T possibly get worse than it is. If it does, someone deserves to be executed. I'm serious.

YES YES YES!!!
I'M SO HAPPY!!!
Maybe the driver will have added better shader support. Someone try playing Max Payne 2 and Counter-Strike Source in Direct X 9 mode instead of Direct X 7 mode. Also, someone let us know of you're able to run things that require direct rendering alongside Compiz Fusion and XGL with this new driver, like Google Earth.
I can't wait to see what 8.42 will be like!
Imagine 8.43!! *DROOLS*
BTW: What does AIGLX support mean?

It's what lets you use compiz without a serious pain in the rear install.

Does compiz run any faster with AIGLX?

It means for ATI you wont have to setup XGL in order to run compiz/beryl and the regular KDE session will be supported.

Not only new drivers, but according to this http://lwn.net/Articles/248227/ they are releasing the specifications for the R500 onward to facilitate the development of open source drivers.

Whoa! That is quite an "about face" for them! I just gained a world of respect for them as a company, I'm still reserving judgment on their products (not a big fan, ATM). It will be interesting to see how Intel and Nvidia react to this, if at all.

Maybe I can take back all the stuff I posted about ATI and finally get compiz on my damn laptop. If AMD was behind the move I might consider using their CPUs on my next system. Also Intel drivers suck no matter what platform they are on.

If all this is true with the new 8.41.2 rls and that they are sharing specs ect. then hurray!!
But don't want to hope for tomuch even if the tests says that my card will more or less dubble in FPS on most games and finally be able to use Compiz ect.
Imagine the set back if the driver doesn't deliver >_<

Kinda fits my thoughts the other day:

hehe
I really hope for all our ATI card owners that this is the change in the wind they've been seeking. It's long overdue.

Now if only Lexmark would follow suit as well and start actually supporting the Linux community for their printers and all-in-one systems such as the x1240

Not to be pessimistic, but I want to see it before I believe it. I say that because we've heard the same old riddle for years.
Yes, AMD have taken over, but let us not hype it too much before the actually driver is out.

according to the reports from Phoronix AIGLX support will PROBABLY be available in next month's binary blob which means that we could see the end of having to use XGL for compiz-fusion around the same time Gutsy officially launches.
Heres hoping they deliver on that benchmark time table.
Also reports of greatly increased performance for the R300/R400 cards using the latest binary they plan to release this month.
Although still no support for the older ATI cards/chipsets which is a bit disheartening but if they really do deliver on aiding the opensource community efforts we could probably see increase performance on that front as well.

Now they need to get on the ball with support for the X1950 and X1650 series cards. This is my biggest pet peeve. I wish I knew more to be able to help out.
