I dug around an found my DVD for SA. The game plays through perfectly, only a few graphical glitches with textures (signs, decals, and the chrome on cars). Otherwise it's pretty solid. Loads up faster than on windows by a long shot and has excellent stability. WINE has made some great strides in the last few months that's for sure.

EDIT: also I didn't need a CD crack, worked just like on Windows.

What specs would you recommend to get this game running in Ubuntu? I have a spec that's good enough to play it on XP, but do I need more power to run it in Linux?

My specs are AMD Sempron 2200+, GeForce FX5600XT 128Mb graphics, and 768Mb RAM. Would that do it? If so I'm going to pick up a copy! I loved SA on my old Xbox.

My box plays it on medium settings, pretty well.

Sempron 3600+ 1.6Ghz, 512MB RAM, 256MB GeForce 5500FX

As I mentioned it just a few corrupted textures but it plays great.
