It might run in Wine or VMware, but there are also a lot of alternatives. What are you trying to do?

sudo chmod 755 realplayer.bin
Or use the repos. It's easier;)

One of these days, I will count up all the times I have posted that...

No, don't use Automatix. Just read the instructions in the following link:

The (insert program name) does that already and is included in (newest development ubuntu release) already. (this has been said many times on the gutsy idea pool)

You don't need to do all this stuff.
Just do a
sudo apt-get install <packagename>
or open Synaptic and search for <packagename> and there it is.

It sounds like it's running on the live CD. Don't worry, Windows is still there.

I simply answer their question with as much information and/or hyperlinks that I can provide. I remember what it was like to be swamped with how different Linux is from that other OS and how confusing it was in the beginning. I also know how crummy the search function is on these boards.

So, why bother with the snickering? Just help the future of Linux.

My two cents (U.S.) ;)

Because I help newbies all the time, answer the same questions repeatedly, and have a sense of humor. Seriously, did you read the first post?

Yeah, i did read the first post. Maybe I'm a bit cranky... I didn't mean to offend anyone. Sorry if I did.

Sorry, my crystal ball is currently under maintenance so you'll have to tell me yourself which command(s) you typed.

(Alternates : which version of Ubuntu you use / what model your graphics card is / which desktop environment you use / etc.)

How many times do we have to repeat that? Or are people too familiar with Start>Run>cmd?

/me finds answer in one (or more) of first five results.
/me posts link for noob with polite request that they try searching before posting in future.
/me edits post and adds search terms used. :D (I always forget to include them for some reason)

you have an absolute beginners thread, which shouldnt really be that, you want the distro to grow, but when a noob comes on here asking why his wireless card dont work, doesnt understand the command line, god the person has just switched pc on for the past x years on windoze and then being told its actually going to have to work at it for some device to work.

@playme123: This is the Community Cafe Games Forum. I think you want the Incoherent Rambling Forum. (hint: punctuation!)

You have execute that command as root.
To do so, prefix your command with "sudo" and enter your user password when prompted.

Something that you do not seem to realize, is that this entire sub-forum is for fun and not to be taken seriously. If someone is rude to a noob in a thread in which they are asking for help, then simply click on the "Report" link (upper right of the post) and report them to the moderators.

This is a game, playme. No one here is attacking new users, and no one is denying that we were all ourselves once new users. You don't like the game, you don't have to play. :)

You have to wait for the Firefox update to come through the repos.
(I'll admit, that's a tricky one. Took me a while to understand how that worked when I first started with Ubuntu:p)

No, your applications are still running (just press ALT+TAB to switch between them); add Window List to your bottom panel.

Right-click on the remaining panel and take the option to "Add a panel".

No, the server edition doesn't come with a GUI. You can add one, though:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
