Is it just me, or are the Ubuntu screensavers awesome?! I especially like the Matrix ones, and the one that looks like the blue screen of death from Windows. I like "techie" screensavers ;)

I agree... I had nostalgia by seeing the Amiga Workbench screen with the BSOD screensaver ! :o

Uh!...Those really slick screensavers arent property or designed by Ubuntu, they are specially made for The X Windowing System (XFree86 and Xorg)

I sort of guessed that, because some of them seemed to be named after people (I assume the ones who made the screensaver) but even so!!

I also like the random screensaver option. Stupid Windows :P Linux has opened up so many cool features that Windows users would never even dream of.

BSOD is my favorite... keeps people from messing with my computer (well, i have a password on back up, but anyway...)

right now i'm using Xjack.

if you've seen and liked "the shining" (the movie), it makes perfect sense.

if not, everyone think's you're weird. they think i'm weird anyway because i run linux and my best friend lives in australia, online.

All the gl screensavers are beautiful! Most of them are available for windows as well by the way. But the screensaver I like most is not included: the great Electric Sheep!

There seem to have been a few more being added in Breezy (or a least a few more I didn't recognise from before). Now I just need to wait for the nvidia drivers to be brought up to date so the gl ones work at a reasonable speed. (:

I personally like the flying toasters/bread...

I would *love* to have a screensaver that would do what the opening title sequence of the old TV show did with any arbitrary text.

Sing it with me now--ooohooohoooooo....OOOOhhooooOOOOO......

Does anyone know the "RSS Visualizer" that comes with OS X Tiger? It is really awesome
It would be really cool to have that for Linux!

I was wondering why there's no Ubuntu screensaver. I think there should be a default screensaver which is somehow related to Ubuntu. Like (for example) Windows XP has.

Yes the some of the screen savers are totaly amazing. I also heard some talk about being able to use a screen saver as a desktop background think it was a wm of something. Anyways I would love to have the matrix screensaver as a desktop backgound. Is it possible I have seen it see it on tv all the time is it probable maybe if you have a top of the line putter

This is something I often humorously mention to people that I introduce Linux to. "My Ubuntu install came with way better screensavers than windows :) If you're going to pay $300 for your OS, they should at least include a few more. Oh yeah, if you want to buy Microsoft Plus(TM) then you can get more!"

But in all seriousness, they rock. Some people think they will have a seizure if they look at it for too long (I have them all selected to rotate randomly)

But there are plenty of 'free' ones out there... You must have seen them... :---)

When I want impress Windows users, I show then 3ddesk. Fancy desktop switching just for the hell of it. Ctrl-Left/Right is quicker, but 3d looks way cooler.

I like the Matrix open gl screensaver the most. It looks remarkably authentic when seen from a distance....like you are actually in the movie..

Windows' screensavers are stupid, at least those included by default..

I've always found that the screensavers that come with Linux are alot cooler than the ones that come with Windows. Not to mention that Linux gives you like 200 screensavers (or atleast it seems like taht many when I used Fedora 2) and Windows gives you about 20

My favorite is XAnalogTV. I have it set to grab screenshots. Pre-Linux I did not use a screensaver, partly because I did not need one because I would just set the screen to blank and also because I never liked what came with windows.

Hehe.. Ubuntu forums waste a lot of my life. It's the ultimate procrastination tool.
I really like the flurry screensaver (amoungst others) and the fact that it's been really nicely ported from OS X (am I right??) while versions I've seen for Windows struggle to install and struggle to perform as smoothly as the one in Linux :)

I installed 3ddesk, but I can't figure out how to use it =\fire up a terminal and type 3ddeskYour desktop should respond by shrinking and showing the other three. at this time they'll be grey, so kind of ugly.
use left/right arrows to move, then enter to select another and it should come back to full screen.
Next time you run it, that one will also look right in the multiple view. Once you've loaded them all, you're off.

Somewhere on these forums is a thread about how to bind it to a F key. Or you can create a launcher in a panel.

Oh, and on the topic of screensavers, I was using Windows earlier, and forgot that I have a BSOD screensaver installed there...

hey have you guys seen the thread in the art section on making screensavers into wallpapers in GNOME?

that is freaking awesome!! :-P

right now i am using xmatrix since my computer specs are not fast enough for one of the opengl ones. it is uber cool and it only uses 2-3% of my cpu.

Open up synaptic, and do a search for screensaver, I think the extra screensavers have an 'extra' as a suffix.

The program used for this is xwinwrap, there's a few how to's available for installing/configuring it around. One is:

I like the screensavers but out of the box many of them don't seem configured to use a GPU... on my machine some of them cause my computer to heat up more than playing oblivion did on windows, and get really low framerates.

Little ubuntu logos floating around a black background, from a distance it reminds me of goldfish swimming around.

I would also agree that the screen savers that come packaged with ubuntu are awesome. A lot of the windows screensavers are too generic in my opinion, but these are cool as can be. The best is clearly solarwinds! ;)

I like skyrockets too, its a real shame it has no sound, although I can image how annoying that would get, but as an option, and if the sounds synched with the rockets, that would be coo-hoo-hool

Just a note to say the Electric Sheep IS available, it is in the ppa somewhere I think. The only thing wrong with it is it downloads more screensavers while its going, if you have limited downloads then this is no good. I think an improvement would be a scheduling tool, so it downloads for set hours say midnight to 2 am or something.

Anywho. Its a very beautiful, evolving, majestic screensaver and it DOES run of Linux!

Does the BSOD really fool people? As far as I know (I might be wrong) Ubuntu/Kubuntu doesn't have a BSOD. Then again only 0.83% of the population uses Linux so it might fool alot. I find that the best defence against people who might use your computer is a good password and have it auto-lock when it goes to screensaver.

It shows error screens from many many different OSes, not just Windows. It's pretty cool, check it out ;)

Currently I have the Phosphor screensaver set up to print out the Linux kernel source code. :D

I heard from my local PBS rep that Lucas bought all the rights to he old doctor who episodes and they couldn't afford to run them anymore! Maybe that's why there's no screensavers??

Pisses me off! I worked for days with the Celestial Intervention Agency (a Doc Who fan club) on PBS pledge drives and they can't play them anymore!
