View Full Version : Has Google ever asked you to put a verification meta line in your website?

A while back when I was designing my first website (for someone else), I tried to find out how to make it so that Google would easily be able to show my webpage as a result in their search engine.

As I remember it, it asked me to add a line in my html code, specifically a meta tag line, and it looked like this:

<meta name="verify-v1" content="v/hp19giX19sK7+zQoAMHB4uUilu5P4OO6UL6R4T4g4=" />Did anyone ever get asked to do this by google? Is it okay to remove it later?

Right now it is a lot easier to add your URL to google's index, you just have to add it here: http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

I verify my site in Google by inserting a html file created by them (i.e. google2ffcb23hvbgyc1185b5.html) into my root directory.

It does say that the file should stay there.
Ensure the verification file or meta tag is still in place for your account.

@Obor: How could you verify your site with Google and have them generated the .html file for you? Could you please elaborate, thanks :-)

I had to verify it when I added the domain to my account for things like adsense, but not when adding it to the search engine.

When you submit your sitemap to google they ask you to verify that the site is yours. More info here http://www.google.com/webmasters/ (you need to login to webmaster tools)

Ah I see now, it is just so that google has your site in their index, I did it here as the previous poster mentioned: http://www.google.com/webmasters/

And you have to keep it so that they can keep verifying it.
