I have found a way to use make the panels in Gnome at the top and bottom of the screen to use real-time transparency - instead of the default method where it just copies the desktop.
All you need to do:
1. Install CompizFusion or Beryl.
2. Click on a blank area in the panel.
3. Hold the ALT key and scroll the mouse wheel.
This will apply CompizFusions/Beryls real-time transparency instead of just copying the wallpaper.
I was so pleased finally get real-time transparency on the panels I thought I'd share.
Enjoy.
