The other day two comps at work that drive production machines went down due to a virus (the comps weren't even connected to the net, you can't beat those guys...).

Thanks to my Kubuntu LiveCD I managed to backup the important files (one of the disks crashed widly, Windows was unable to read the data).

The boss was quite impressed by the LiveCD so I tried and convinced him to install it, and install in Wine the only two Windows applications that are critical (they have no equivalent in Linux), to check compatibility. Everything else was fine, he was even enthusiastic to ditch Windows, MSOffice and the like altogether if those two apps worked.

Unfortunately, one application uses a hardware dongle + Windows driver, and the other just locked up when run. Although I tried the whole day (getting newer version of Wine, tweaking both Wine and the apps) it was to no avail.

So those two comps are going back to Windows... :(

The good part of the story is that the boss has been so impressed anyway that I will probably reintroduce Kubuntu for our next software project (we are both a hard&software company), which should then be cross platform (Qt4). Yay! :D

So even though today was quite a deception, I guess it was not wasted time anyway...

Great to see you have linux at office.

Unfortunately i have to deal with crappy windows at office.

I have tried to persuade my boss to switch to ubuntu, shown him all positive benefits but he keep saying "It doesnot come with warranty, so we dopnt want it"

Any suggestion?
