i just thought id add my 2 cents here, ill make it brief...

Ive been trying various Linux distros over the past 4 years and they are interesting and show promise, but i have gone back to windows every time, learning curve is just way too steep...

And then came Ubuntu, picked it up from a magazine cover booted the live CD installed the system in about 15 minutes and i was off and running, discovered apt-get and i was over the moon!

Now ive been using ubuntu for about 2 months, ive setup an ubuntu server as my gateway at work (100 or so users and 5 servers) and im soon implementing a mail server running on Ubuntu server. im even thinking about moving all our workstations to Ubuntu over the next 12-24 months since im seriously pissed at vista!

So from what ive experianced, good and bad im confident Ubuntu is the distro thats going to bring Linux OS on par with windows in the next few years, the support for Ubuntu is incredible, the learning curve is almost on par with windows (for general using) and the motivation behind the developers is awesome!

So in short, Thanks Ubuntu and to the Ubuntu community and developers, thanks to everyone helping daily to get my system running. its strange, i find myself daily trying to give something back to the community for the first time ever, windows ive used for 5 years and not once have i felt the need to beta test or help in anyway.

Anyway, thats my experiance, just wanted to share it :)

That's great how you're using it at work. Are you in charge of servers at your company or just influential? :)

well i was the IT training and started back in october, but ive shown motivation and want to improve the company, so they have taken my advice.

unfortunatly our 2 main servers still run Windows server 2003 but thats because the software we use is only written for windows :( thats ok, i can deal with 2 out of 100 odd computers running windows hehe.

at first the idea of running linux was thrown straight out the window, untill i explained how just about every major mail server runs on a linux of some sort, most of the software is free, and it is incredibly stable compared to windows.

all i need now is for my laptop to run Gutsy 7.10 and vmware (need to run virtual windows for tech support) i can rid myself of windows as my main OS (except for gaming)

Try wine?

I doubt wine is usable for complex server software. Wine is for simple userspace apps.

The software we use is way too much for wine. i work for a chicken processing company employing 500+ people and the software runs all our on floor machines aswell as inventory and RF scanners, also for sales and finance. it runs on a progress database which can be run under linux but the developers of the software unfortunatly choose to run under windows and i seriously doubt they know anything about linux. so unfortunatly we are stick with windows.

as for wine for games, ive tried it and failed, to be honost at this point its way too complicated and time consuming trying to run games under linux. wine seems best for simple windows aps and cadega was ok for games. unfortunatly the games i do have running (not many) run about 25% the speed they do under windows, mainly because im having serious issues getting new nvidia drivers installed since i have a 7950GT and nothing detects it.
