I find it highly annoying to have only two ways of viewing folder contents in nautilus. It would be handy to be able to choose between icons with thumbs and icons without thumbs...

also, which is actually my major concern, its pretty lame to have a single item in "list mode" occupy an entire line on the screen even though theres a lot of free space after it. Maybe you could make an option to enable multiple columns in list mode.

and of course, find a way in which you can drag&drop a file into a folder the contents of which are viewed in list mode, without placing the file in a sub-directory.

You can always try thunar, which has the first two items you are looking for. I myself would like to see Nautilus (or Thunar) be able to handle separating the window into two (like in the new Dolphin \\:D/) so that I can easily drag-and-drop between folders in the same window (always is painful when I have to open a window that takes up extra space on the panel because Swiftweasel makes the whole thing expand with its title).

but neither thunar or dolphin integrate well into ubuntu.... why not teach nautilus how to be cool too :D ?
