In windows I have a button on my start bar that launches a file tree. Since all of my files exist in a folder hierarchy, It makes it real easy to launch a file without having to wait for the file browser windows to open up.

I was wondering if it would be possible to do something similar with the Gnome Panel?

Sure there is, but it's only doable by editing the menus manually. It could be just a setting though to view /home in gnome menu. Personally I wouldn't use it but...

PanelFM does it.

PanelFM makes me hunt down a bunch of packages in the manager before presenting me with this lovely error message:

makedev: don't know how to make device "makedev-man"

I've filed a bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/133972) to get it included in Ubuntu. In the meantime, please start a thread to ask for help on compiling it in the appropriate support forum.

Thanks! If this gets included then I won't have to compile it myself anyway.:)
