View Full Version : More COHERENT UBUNTU LOOK

As we know, Ubuntu should have a coherent look and every application should have the same colours and similar style.
For the regular ubuntu user there is no difference if the app is written in qt or in gtk.
Reffering to the fact, that qt and kde applications look bad on default Ubuntu installation (because of the lack of qt-style) I suggest to make for example polymer qt style installed by default and manage qt applications to use the same colours as the gnome Human theme - just to create proper config file and attach it to the default Ubuntu install.
At the moment if you want to make qt apps to look like a gnome app you have to:
- Install qt3-qtconfig and polymer packages using synaptic
- From a shell, run qtconfig and adjust the fonts, the colors and the style (choose polymer as style)
- From a shell, run polymer-config and enable software tint transparency (if you like it)
Some people that don't know how to change qt apps appearance just uninstall them (ex. great Opera browser). It is easy and doesn't need too much effort to make this part of Ubuntu better. People who won't like Ubuntu human look in their qt apps will be able to change it, but beginners will have good-looking apps at the beginning.
A lot of people would be thankful for this simple patch: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=50974

It's still a QT 4 app, make no mistake.

I understand that Opera will be in qt4 but even if qt4 appearance will be much better it doesn't change the fact, that there are many qt3, kde apps that look ugly on gnome. Only few modifications to make begginers happy - install qt-style and write short conf to be included i the home folder in defaul ubuntu installation. I remember, few years ago I was very confused and didn't know what to do with this ugly look of SOME applications (as I wrote it doesn't make a difference to regular user if app is gnome or kde and there are no gnome applications for some tasks).

KControl themes QT Apps too, and then you can pick a Human-esque style for Qt-Apps and KDE Apps. I use KDE so I dunno how well it'd work in GNOME, but I did make a style to address this issue:

Yes, choosing style in kcontrol does work but begginers don't know about it! Why can't kde apps look well just in the default installation?

Because they use Qt. :p And KDE Libs, and they aren't GTK apps. Plus I think the revert to the Plastik style, or whatever your distros default style is, if no style is defined in KControl.

But the problem is that there is no qt style installed on Ubuntu by default! That's exactly what I'm talking about! I will try to run Ubuntu from the live-cd, install Opera and attach a screenshot.

Ah I see what you are saying. Yes that could cause quite an issue.

That's how Opera looks after installation on Ubuntu system! Ugly, isn't it? The only way to change it is to install some qt style and qt-config. Then you have to run qtconfig and choose proper style and colors. But who knows about that?

Yeah that's bad. So that's a +1 for this idea.

I totally agree with this. The main reason I don't use amarok is that it doesn't mesh well. Does this affect the cursor as well? I have been trying to figure out how to keep the default human cursor with kde apps in gnome. I even installed kcontrol and it indicates human is being used but the crappy x-cursors show up when the window is busy.

You have to use Kubuntu Human, I have it packaged in the attachment.

Do you mean in kcontrol? And if so, is the attached different from the default human cursor in the kde packages installed with amarok/kcontrol?

Yes install it with KControl. KDE Apps have some specific cursors. It's just regular Human with some cursors duplicated and then renamed.

All Desktop linux distros should have had it for years!

Good idea, and Kubuntu should do the same by default for GTK apps. The built-in tool to make GTK apps follow the QT theme doesn't work very well.

That's Opera 9.5 with qt4. Still very ugly on Ubuntu. Reason - no qt style installed by default with ubuntu. God... is it that difficult to repair it?
