I had been using yahoo for +10 years or so and never had any problems with it.

Then I discovered Igoogle....

Now on one web page I can check my calender, check my stocks, email, google reader, write to do notes, and check the weather. Pretty slick. Then I realized the gmail has free pop3 forwarding so I can get my email on thunderbird. On Yahoo you had to be a premium member to do that. Today I discovered that google calender can send your cell phone your agenda every day VIA cell phone text message at 5am. This kind of functionary is unrivaled. They have some very creative people working for google and I look forward to a google OS.

I am also a 10 + user of Yahoo, but lately I am getting fed up with all the spam that gets into my account. The google systems is kind of nice, I get to add content that on my.yahoo I gave up trying.

The google document is not bad also for those moment you don't have Open Office at hand.

Nope, but given the choice between Google and companies such as Time Warner, Verizon and the other big telcos, I'd take Google any day.

I rather not fall under the control of any of the big companies and hopefully Google wont turn into a BIG Brother type of company and will leave us be.

Google does some great things technology wise, but their privacy policy is horrid from what i've heard.

Google is the ultimate resource for the moment. I'm not interested in all these other features but their search is great.

It is already (and has been for quite a long time BTW). Moreover I have very little respect for companies that bow in front of censorship (they're not the only ones, but that doesn't change my point).

If you're looking for a good search engine, try clusty.com (http://clusty.com)

Well it's either commie China cuts them off or they censor their search. Do you know how many people are in China? That's a lot of money to throw away.

Google could be collecting information on you, you never know.

Not on individuals, but on searches made anonymously by individuals.

That's what I have been told, anyway.

My understanding is that Google tracks all click-throughs and matches them to an IP address and any of its own cookies present on your system. If you're not logged in to an account, it doesn't know who you are, but it can keep track of where an individual computer goes. The purpose is to make the ad selections relevant to the user's "interests."

The criticism that's been levelled against them is about the length of time they keep this info in their databases. Two years or something.

Anyway, there's a handy Firefox extension called "Customize Google" that allows you to control exactly how the browser interacts with Google. You can fix any privacy settings that might happen to bother you.

We should punish them rather than find detours.
If a lot of people will use other search engines then these search engines will be much better and will kill google search (but not other google services like gmail, docs,...).

Yes on individuals if you use gmail: they have the right to scan your emails supposedly for commercial applications only but after several politically motivated attempts to block some mails I tend to believe they are either severely compromised in their security or that someone is lending hand to our fascist enemies that seek to bring down our internal communications.

Punish them for what? For putting cookies on your computer? If that's a punishable offense to you, then you should stop using the internet altogether. It's an unfriendly, privacy-invading, data-collecting place. The only way to control exactly what information is collected about you is to run workarounds like Customize Google. And AdBlock. And NoScript. And CookieSafe.

None of these problems are unique to Google, though. My university e-mail account (and various work accounts in the past) have all blocked legitimate e-mails from time to time. This is called a "spam filter," and you can usually disable it if you want to know more about online gambling sites.

And I honestly can't remember the last time I got any spam from Google.

The bottom line, for me, is that I want to know what's going on on my computer. If using a tool like Customize Google to disable clickthrough tracking does this, I'm going to do that.

Well, there you have it. I don't find Windows "unacceptable." I just prefer Linux, for many reasons.

I used to love Google, but I don't know that I trust them so much any more. Like most good things, they seem to be getting a little too big, and it makes me uncomfortable somehow.

I am probably going to dump my Gmail account, because I've been getting canned e-mails from Google recruiters that are obviously keyed to the content of my mailbox. I don't know if that makes sense or not. ...

I'm also not keen on a search engine that keeps records on searches, especially after that whole AOL flub (http://news.com.com/AOL+apologizes+for+release+of+user+search+data/2100-1030_3-6102793.html) last year. I use Ixquick (http://www.ixquick.com) now, since they swear they don't keep records on searches. (I know: Promises, promises. ... )

I've read it, and I am not at all worried about Google. It did not apply to Google, it was about the FBI. I did not even see a mention of Google in the article. I did see a mention of Sprint, though, and that was interesting.

Concerning the primary subject of this thread: yes, I find Google very useful. Here are some sites associated with Google you might find interesting:

Have been using Google search engine and Gmail for years now. It is already the most widely used internet search engine and dominates online advertising. Wonder which other service is Google going to come up with in the coming years.

i dont worry about google's policies, mostly because they are unintentional or required by law. i love google, for it seeming simplicity and ability to offer me more than just a search engine. Google earth is fun, and i hope google desktop come to linux.
