It's probably matter of taste, but I'd use 2.6.22.3, and upgrade to 2.6.23 as soon at it gets stable status. And then I'd use my favourite distribution with it, Ubuntu.

Well ... Ubuntu is a good choice for me, because there is good support behind it ... and huge forum to answer virtually any question :)

Every Linux distro is essentially the same at the core, its just a matter of preference as to which one you want to use for gaming. Ubuntu has worked better than any other for me due to its ease of use and incredible community support. In the past I have tried Slackware, Red Hat, Fedora Core, Suse and even a few lesser distros like Stormix, but none have been as enjoyable as Ubuntu.
