View Full Version : US Teams Poll: Land's End Embroidered Goods?

I am proposing that the US start a Land's End Corporate Store that will
enable us to order items with the Ubuntu Logo embroidered on them.
There would be an initial set up fee of $95 US, with no minimum
order. Below is a link to the Land's End Corporate Sales page showing
all the items you could order with an Ubuntu logo embroidered right on
it. http://ocs.landsend.com/corpsales
This would be a standard Ubuntu Logo embroidered on all items. It may also have Ubuntu embroidered under it.

Another suggestion for a vendor is Giant Robot Printing:
http://giantrobotprinting.com/store/
I've bought stuff from them and was impressed by the quality and by their customer service. They also have a "creative commons" focus.

mdebusk - Thanks I'll look that one over.

I might mention that this store would be open to anyone, not just US Loco Team members.

One question. Would we be designing a "standard" shirt or whatever or would each loco be able to do a custom design. I an in favor of the idea in either case since I've not heard anything real great about the official ubuntu goods. However, I know the Colo Loco is looking to do a team shirt so just a standand Ubuntu shirt wouldn't meet our needs.

Land's End usually has good stuff, but I think there's also something to be said for supporting companies that support cc gpl and other copyleft licenses.

m.musashi - This would be standard Ubuntu Logo, it may say Ubuntu
under the logo. There would be no changing it to suit individual loco
teams.

Sloggerkhan - That's not a bad idea. If you or someone else can get
me some links. I do want other items besides shirts, ie laptop cases,
outerwear, throws, and we also must have items of clothing for both
genders.

I'm up for anything that is embroidered and good quality. I've got a few bits from Land's End, and yes... they offer good quality products.

Great Idea....Lands End quality is good and the prices aren't that bad.

I'm confused somehow. Why don't you use https://shop.canonical.com/ for ordering your clothes? Of course the shipping costs may be a little bit higher than in the US but 95$ as set up fee isn't that less.

This would be really sweet. I'll definitely keep up to date on this :)

dee.dw - I did look at the Canonical Store that you linked above. There
merchandise is very nice. However, one thing I am trying to do is to
expand the number of items available. Please visit the Land's End link
I provided and you will see that not only is the number of items much
greater, you can also order in different colors, styles, and material.

To be honest for me this would be an overkill. ;) But no problem: I think for the US a seperate shop would be fine somehow. I just want to mention the Canonical shop for non-US citizens (primary European ones). :)

dee.dw - no problem! I just heard from Gerry Carr - Marketing Manager, Canonical. He seems to be in favor of the idea and has offered their help. :)

I checked out the Canonical Store on Friday, and I really dig those Ubuntu hats. When I went to buy one though, the shipping was nearly twice as much as the hat itself, bringing the $8.65 hat to $23.87. I ended up bailing out on the sale due to the shipping. If it had a shipping rate from within the US, I would have definitely bought it by now. Having a US based shop sounds like a good idea to me.

My family buys extensively from Lands' End - they are fantastic for quality and durability.

Like GoatTuber I would like some Ubuntu gear but was put off the Canonical store by the cost of shipping to the US. Minimum shipping, for the very smallest item using the slowest transportation, is ~$16 US. That's just for some labels--it goes up from there for larger items. Pretty steep.
If we get something with good quality and reasonable shipping costs I'll definitely be interested!

I think that this is a great idea. I love buying stuff that shows off my interests and profession. I think going to a US based vendor will not only allow the expansion of more expensive items such as shirts, bags, and jackets, but it will also enable smaller nick-nacks to be produced and shipped for cheaper than Canocal can provide.
I'm sure the $95 investment will pay for itself just by saving LoCo teams from international shipping charges within 10-20 orders. I'd say that it's a no-brainer!

I agree, I would love to beable to buy merch in bulk and that really is a cheap down payment.

I think it's a great idea. I hear the duty charges from Canonical to the U.S. are mighty steep.
In the meantime, I am interested in setting up a logo template (like the logo at the upper left of this screen) at a local embroiderer's. Once it's set up, it will be there forever. If you would like to have something stitched, shoot me an email or reply to this post and I'll give you the embroiderer's contact info.

Any word on this project? It came up at a recent Mythbuntu seminar we held and there were a lot of people interested.
