I've installed Compiz Fusion via Amaranths repos and everythings fine and dandy, it's very nice looking, despite the performance on my 8800 GTS :-\ But that's for another thread. Problem is, whenever I go to either reset X (ctrl + alt + backspace) or even just shut off my computer, either through terminal or through the gui, it locks up just showing the background image. It'll take all my icons and gnome interface away, but I still see my background. Has anybody else experienced this? Or is there a fix? Thanks!

Yes i get this too. Best method I've found is to select 'switch user' first which will take you to the log in screen and then shut down from there. May seem like nothings happening at first but you should hear some hdd activity and it will shut down.
Hopefully some new repos will be available soon so we can reinstall.

I wonder if it's an nVidia bug or a repo bug. Anybody else?

As for the Nvidia Users, you can try what I wrote here (http://forlong.blogage.de/article/2007/8/26/The-best-way-to-install-Compiz-Fusion-on-Ubuntu-Feisty) in the Troubleshooting section under Compiz freezes randomly and/or permanently on logout

I got this behavior when I used compiz from Amaranths repos in conjunction with the latest(100.14.11) Nvidia drivers. When I used the earlier NVidia Drivers(from the restricted drivers manager) everything worked as expected.

Currently I am using the Trevino repos with the latest Nvidia drivers and everything is working great!

Rarely do I have any problems.

On a little side note...
I thought this was a compiz problem when it was happening to me as well.
Turns out it was because of Keytouch, so if you are using Keytouch, search for this with keytouch instead of compiz and there is a fix of sorts.
I shut down/logout fine now.
