When I installed the Ati Radeon x1950pro driver, on ubuntu version 7.04 the install went well, but every time I click desktop effects a box comes up and says that "The Composite extension is not available."
Any help on fixing this problem would be appreciated.

Having same problem on ATI Radeon XPress 200M on an HP Pavilion dv5000 on Ubuntu Feisty. Using ATI restricted drivers through Restricted Drivers Manager. Xorg follows :
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf(5) manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

I thought originally that it was simply a matter of changing the "Composite" value from "0" to "1", but that caused all manner of problems. Any help appreciated! Thanks!

What version of fglrx is it? Also, what's the output of the command glxinfo? I had A ATI 1950xtx Crossfire setup and it took me ages to get compiz running, then I ended up bailing on the whole setup anyway for nVidia components.
I should be able to help you get it working for the 1950 though, it's much easier than most of the x**** series.

That is the way it's supposed to be fixed.
I can guess that you're having driver problems. Paste the output of:

I am having the same problem in the new Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon and my best guess is to greate an xgl session, certainly when working with ati.
Can't try it here right now cause i'm doing a partial upgrade of gutsy but certainly will try it later on this day

@All
Desktop effects is an experimental feature.
@all with ATi xPRESS 200 series cards
Those with fglrx drivers should install Xgl to get desktop effects.Preferably use Compiz-Fusion and Beryl because they run fine on xPress 200 series cards with Xgl(Personal experience 8):-D)Also,they provide better effects :P
To install Xgl:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xgl
Look through the procedure on www.ubuntuguide.org for the entire procedure to get Xgl and Beryl working...LOOK ONLY under the fglrx section. The open-source drivers of ATi xPress 200 series cards don't support 3D desktop effects.
Those without fglrx drivers should install them and Xgl IF they want desktop effects.

I had the same problem while running fiesty, but it went away by opening up the xorg.conf file and changing the composite option from "disable" to "enable".

Nopes, sorry, you will have to look elsewhere....try ubuntuguide.org,it's quite a complete guide, though unofficial......but recognized at Ubuntu Forums......:)

Composite extensions are not supported by fglrx because its proprietary and ATI hates us... end of story.
They will supposedly, one day, when the idea is out of "beta" (so says ATI)... but who knows when that is (I've been waiting over a year).
The real truth is that ATI has been too busy incorporating their hardware DRM checks into their new DX10 cards that will wow all the fanboys completely oblivious to their systems being entirely taken over and doing god knows what.
Long story short... learn the lesson I did... under no circumstances, support ATI or AMD in their current way of doing business. If you love linux, help bipolar america tip the scales in the way of Intel and nVidia.

ya im still having the same problem after scouring the forums for answers to this same problem, I think ati's doing this on purpose, i had a hell of a time getting my 9200 to load properly, but it was so worth it, so, i thought id try annother computer, and now am having some strange issues with an ati rc410 radeon xpress 200 onboard card that is 3D supported, and says its supported on the driver download forum, ive tried numorus drivers, commands, xserver settings, but everything i follow either brings me two two scenarios when trying to enable desktop effects, compossite could not be loaded, or desktop effects could not be enabled. Any ideas people?

For the record, the fixes listed by others here worked for me with Gutsy Gibbon Beta running on an ATI X1800 GTO, Asus A8R32MVP, AMD X2 4400.
This is what I did:
From command line make xorg.conf backup:
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
Open xorg.conf in text editor:
sudo nano -w /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Change:
Option "Composite" "0"
to:
Option "Composite" "1"
Save changes and exit editor.
From command line:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xgl
Restart X-server (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace -- I assume this works although I actually rebooted)
Go to System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects and enable some of the most shameless eye candy yet seen ;)

This helped. I have a Acer Aspire laptop with ATI Mobility Radeon x700. I'm using Gutsy (I installed the daily build from October 14th)
It seems like this guide changed my keyboard layout from Finnish to English, but that was easily fixed :)
Update: Seems like it screwed up a number of other things too. Games didn't work properly (Supertux even made X crash the moment it tried to launch. Didn't even hear the welcome music before I was given the login window), GNOME behaved funnily (no, I don't mean the desktop effects! ;)) etc, so I reverted to my old xorg.conf and removed the packages installed. Too bad. I hoped I'd finally get some pretty effects on my laptop, but seems like ATI is a no-no if you want to use Linux. Well, luckily my desktop computer has nvidia, so I can enjoy the effects on that one instead :)

I just followed these instructions, and the message about composite do not appear any more. The problem is that I can still get no desktop effects on Gutsy, "Desktop effects could not be enabled" message appears, and the whole system goes slower now.
I have an ATI Radeon X1600.

When i have installed ubuntu rc 3d works fine.
After I have upgraded ubuntu rc and 3d not work,
So i have installed xserver-glx and the system goes slower.
So if i uninstall xserver-glx the system run normally.
3d are not working now.

This worked brilliantly. I would only add that the universal repository will need to be added/uncommented in your sources list in order to pull xserver-xgl.

Thank you so much. I've been searching for a distro that " just work" with 3d and my Ati x1600 card and u solve my problem so easy and newbie proof. Someone mention that it solve but the pc get slow, it happens to me, I fix it by selecting custom 3d and deselect random animations, because my problem apparently was that my pc is slow. But I'm thinking i have a ram card dying.

@All
Desktop effects is an experimental feature.
Thank you! I've been lookin for ages on how to sort this out - seems i was only missing
# Driver whitelist
WHITELIST="nvidia intel ati radeon i810 fglrx"
in /usr/bin/compiz
Other than that i'd installed the ATI drivers from the restricted driver manager in gutsy and compiz manager
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
This is all with an ATI radeon xpress 200 card on a compaq laptop.
Cheers,
Kai

@All with slowdown in performance
That's an expected side-effect of eye-candy,whether with Xgl or otherwise......it does take up some resources, you know..... :)
Also,it's now preferable/advisable to install using Forlong's guide since they are packages backported from Gutsy for Feisty users and enjoy support for updates and suff.....also other eye-candy like AWN and stuff presume hat by default you have been using Forlong's instructions to install C-F.

Hi, yeah, about the slowdown in performance it happens to me but I found out the Animation effects was the mayor cause. I simply deselect about half the animations using compizconfg. Oh and I saw you thanked this thread, how do I do it too?

Thanked the thread?You can thank a user,not a thread....at the least that's what I've observed till now.
