Coolbreeze!

If you were an experienced software engineer and operating systems developer and could write your dream os from scratch from the ground up without altering any linux distros. What if you could write something original and was a breath of fresh air and you called it Coolbreeze OS the operating system that is a breath of fresh air.
What would you want it to do and what unique features would you like to see in it. How user friendly can you make it so its a breeze. Whats the perfect os to you?
cheers from mark

an OS that could support every network card, then download any driver needed automatically. and not have any un-needed packages installed.

I would like an os that supports any hardware and that uses a unique user interface and not some carbon copy of Windows or Mac OS.

Right. There are few good OS's beyond the Unix-likes. Mona is nice, and Menuet too, but they are not as practical.

I just want to remake AmigaOS for a modern PPC with decent driver support. I would leave this intel crap behind so fast that I would actually outrun Carl Lewis when he was at his best. "whooooshhh". It would be no more *nix for me.

For starters start with a modular kernel. Have it include standard IDE controls and what not. Next, do not use GNU. There are a million and one GNU systems out there. We do not need another. I would also recommend trying to come up with a completely new CLI. Try and keep memory resident portions of the OS to minimum. OSes today tend to be very bloated, so don't give us another one of those. Outside of that, make the graphical system completely new as well. Don't use copylefted, pre-existing graphics like most do. Think of a way to manage programs that is not already done. We registry systems, we have all kinds of random systems that never work properly. Give us something new there. For an example see GoboLinux. Do not make another Unix work-alike. That's boring and way over-done.

And on top of that make a file system that makes any sense :). Having configuration files in 19 places doesn't.

The DOS system made sense. If you wanted the configuration for a program you would check the folder. With a Unix-like, the config could be anywhere. System7 also made sense. There was a folder called "Preferences".

I would want a system layout like this
sys/ (kernel modules and the like)
bin/ (program folders)
usr/ (home)
root/ (root home)
pref/ (settings)
However for a good look at logical file trees check GoboLinux

How about an OS that's built on Virtualization technology, from the ground up. Every program running in their own little machine. It's so pretty. So elegant. So... VMWare server ESX... *sigh*
What I want is a secure OS, that is consistent/standardized, and has as little as possible getting between my software and the hardware(what's with all the different HAL methods anyways?).
