I already posted this under general help, but seeing as it only occurred to me after changing to amd64 architecture, and seeing that no one seems to have the faintest idea over there, i thought ill make a repost here

ok, whenever the dialog for entering the root password pops up, and i enter the password the system locks up, the screen turns a light shade of gray, cursor moves, but i cant select or click anything with it...
amd64 architecture, intel core2 quad proc

ps: this only happens when i enter the root pswd in a graphic dialog (eg. the one you get with gksudo nautilus), i have no trouble with entering root pswd in a console (eg. sudo nautilus)

When you say "root password" I assume you mean your own user password after using sudo to get root access to a program or utility, is that right? Seems strange to me or have you actually set a root account which you are using?

yes, as it is for most ubuntu users, my password is simultaneously the root password required to run applications and commands as root via sudo...

any ideas concerning my problem?
