The Linux Mint team has released last night the KDE Edition of their successful Linux operating system, Linux Mint 3.0 (codename Cassandra). The KDE Edition was created by and for the Linux Mint community and it’s based on Bianca-KDE but compatible with all Feisty repositories. Highlights of this release include:

Linux kernel 2.6.20-15
KDE 3.5.6
Beryl 0.2.1 with Beryl-Manager http://www.imgx.org/pthumbs/large/558/7.png (http://www.imgx.org/public/view/full/558)
This release is not as minty as the main edition but it is mintier than Bianca KDE. More Mint applications will be ported to KDE for the Celena KDE edition. This desktop-ready KDE Mint has all the usual Minty goodness for the web and media applications. I have made the choice to make the Mint KDE CE edition more pro-desktop and to mirror the main edition closer with respect to the main applications. So what does this mean? Some applications have been swapped for their more mainstream counterparts.” - says Jamie Birse, maintainer of Linux Mint KDE Edition.
Here are some of the most interesting applications you’ll find in this edition:

OpenOffice 2.2.0
Firefox 2.0.0.4
Thunderbird 1.5.0.12 (version 2.0 is available in the Software Portal)

I can deal with FF, but TBird and Sunbird? Kontact is much better (stability, features, etc.), better integrated (as a single cohesive PIM rather than separate parts that sort of work together), and just fits into KDE much better (although I haven't seen how they themed the mozilla apps). Karbon and Krita appear to be there, so why GIMP and Inkscape? They both do the same thing. Since its KDE, please stick with the KDE app for consistency.

They do earn points in my book for the inclusion of Krita, an awesome photoshop alternative natve to KDE. Dolphin is a nice touch, not in many KDE distros OOTB. Finally, Scribus and KMyMoney are nice apps that you don't often find by default. The one GTK app I use on KDE (Pidgin) isn't even there... go figure.

I haven't booted it yet, but plan to soon. I normally really like Mint's stuff, so I wont pass final judgement until I have tried it.

I agree that KDE apps should be used... The main reason I use KDE is so that I can use KDE apps and save time and RAM on my aging(not old yet) PC

I love the concept, it is cool that it doesn't bring the KDE apps that I don't need, but it does come with the good ones like amarok, k3b and kget, great it doesn't come with krita and koffice but thegimp and openoffice (no offense but the K ones not too good yet in my opinion) . I am thinking more distros should use this hybrid approach.

i was just about to do a mini-review of this, but you beat me to it. i'll just post my thoughts here.

first off, this is coming from a gnome person. i still havnt found a kde based distro that i can settle into. until now. ive always found kde to be on the distracting side, and too busy for my taste. but i find mints' adaptation of kde to be more intuitive than others ive tried. and seems very stable too. ive had stability problems in the past with kde, and so far after 24hrs., not one glitch. good first impression.

the only 3 things i HAD to install after first boot was Nvidia driver, VLC, and X-Chat.i was pretty much done after that. i absolutely love the bundle of packages included. i was using alot of K-packages on gnome anyway.

in my mind, mint is the perfect balance between regular ubuntu and ubuntu ultimate. regular can be a bit sparce and require more tweaking, while ubuntu ultimate can be overkill to some. (no disrespect to either)
i think mint strikes a great balance between ease of use and configurability.
great job!

I downloaded this yesterday I think there are too many apps on there & there are quite a few Gnome apps on there which I feel don't go well on KDE. I'm not a big fan of Mint but I tried the KDE version yesterday, I didn't like it as much as I thought I would.

Linux mint looks really cool! Im thinking of downloading it and having a play with it! I am happy with Fiesty on my laptop but I have a desktop that I dont mind destroying so might put it on that!

It looks very promising. Mint and Mepis are great kde-based distros. Kubuntu could be made powerful as well after adding other features.. My issue with the Mint is with the Mint ISO which is 936MB or something like that. If is to be a DVD, then it should include up to at least 3GB of the media. The spacing seems wasteful for a DVD.

I guess I am used to a DVD ISO that grants the option of KDE or Gnome or XFCE or all of the above being a DVD.

Else, I love Mint. The Kde version must be superb as well. It is still a wonderful distro though. I am still loving Linux Mint Cassandra 3.0.
