But Xournal is working very well for me for the *really* important things for now.

Have you tried xstroke? A member in the forums has built a .deb for it.
Written on a Fujitsu ST5032D slate tablet using xstroke.

There is also cellwriter. Not in the repos though.
PS: I couldn't find the source code for the HWR in maemo / qtopia? Maybe I didn't look deep enough?

You can install the .deb manually with dpkg -i from a root console:

It works just fine on Ubuntu.

OR you can just double click on the file in Nautilus (or Konqueror, or Thunar, or PCManFM).

I have emailed the author of Cellwriter with some suggestions and some bug fixes. Hopefully he can implement them.
I would like to see Cellwriter as default in Ubuntu.
