Yesterday, I was in a car which was in an accident. The car is totalled, but I (and my family) are ok.

My question is: What kind of car accident were you in?

I parked my car on a hill in the evening.

The next morning, the handbrake failed.

It rolled into my local pub. No damage to pub.

I was mortified.

First of all, glad to hear you're all OK!

5 of us in a car going at 170/klm/h (106 miles/h) - the driver was drunk and didn't see the banana-shaped curve coming ahead. We tumbled down an approx. 50-60 meter ravine and finally landed on the roof. No one was physically hurt and it took us 1h to get out of the car which was unfixable.

I got rear-ended. I had an old 1977 Chevy Nova, the person that nailed me had a newer-model truck. The truck took more damage than my car did. Gotta love the old 70s tanks lol. I miss that car, though.

Glad you're alright! 170 kilometres and hour? is that legal? (We where hit withing a couple blocks of our home, buy a car who ran a stop sign)

Well our 19 year old Volvo estate refuses to die (unfortunately). Earlier this year an old man in a BMW crashed into it. While it was parked. Off the road.
The axel was totally knocked out of alignment and the doors were a bit dented but sadly Satan was smiling that day and the car lives on...

We only realized how badly drunk he was once on the freeway. It was too late. He just would not stop the car....and it had been snowing!!!

Your poll needs an "all of the above" answer for me. Of course I've been driving for over 50 years. Never had any serious injuries involved though.

A couple of years ago, I was driving my 1987 Chevy Nova (a small Toyota Corolla in disguise, if I'm not mistaken) at around 4 AM with 2 other friends, after we left another at his house; made a stop at a red light in a boulevard, waiting to take a left turn. Streets were empty. Green light comes up, streets still empty; I start to take the left turn, when out of nowhere comes a huge Ford Lobo pickup truck and hits us on the left rear of the car at around 200 KMH, according to the police analysis. The entire back half of my car disappeared. The friend who was sitting in the back seat flew some 15 meteres and only got a broken hand; the friend that was sitting in the passenger seat only had a few tiny glass shards in his forehead, nothing serious; and I only blacked out for a few minutes. No other injuries. According to the police, the driver of the Lobo fled, only to crash into a minivan some 200 meters away, and his truck caught fire and finally crashed. No casualties.

What about multiple Accidents? (all while I was between 16 and 18 years old)

Accident #1:
Age: 16(?)
Car: Chevy Chevette
Summary: Car meets Tree:oops:
Result : Totaled
I was heading home after sledding with some friends and on a hill I started to slip. The car did not react to anything so I panicked and instead of putting on the breaks.. I hit the clutch and the tree hit us!

To help alleviate the situation a little, since I was supposed to go by the grocery store afterwards, on the phone my Mom asked "Did you get dog food?".

Accident #2:
Age 17(?)
Car : Dodge Omni
Result : Totaled #-o
Summary : Car hits tree sideway, shifts front end over a few inches
This is why boys, girls, hormones, cars and snow do not mix. I was (stupidly) heading out to meet with my girlfriend in a snow storm. Going down a hill (there are a lot of hills where I grew up) and started sliding sideways. The front 12+" of the hood hit the tree while the rest of the car continued. The front end was shifted off to the side and made a huge mess inside the hood.

My parents were not very keen on my girlfriend, and having me total ANOTHER car (my Dad's new-ish car no less), they were not happy.

Accident #3:
Age 18
Car : Buick Skyhawk ](*,)
Result : Totaled, but fixed and continued to be driven
Summary : Crossing a lane of traffic, somebody in my blind spot
This one, I have to admit, was STUPID! STUPID! STUPID! I was driving with a friend (same friend that was in my car for Accident #1.. I think he's cursed) and for some unknown but probably STUPID reason we (at the last minute) decided to turn into a Pizza Hut parking lot. I looked and didn't see anybody before I swerved to the parking lot on the right ... from the left lane (of 2)! I didn't see any headlights or anything but guess what? somebody was THERE! He caught us in the door my friend was looking out at the time and glass was everywhere.

Of course this time my Dad was away and I was driving the only car we had working at the time. I had to call my best friend and had him pick up my Mom and then me and then drive us home. My Dad was NOT happy since that was his car.

Accident #4
Age 19
Car : Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser (Station Wagon)
Result : Damaged, but fixed, survived for years, passed to my brother (he totaled it) :?
Summary: Pulling out of parallel parking space and hit on the side
This was stupid. I was driving in an unfamiliar city in my Mom's Station Wagon and instead of pulling into what I thought was a lane waiting at the light, I ended up street-parking behind a parked car. As I tried pulling out I got hit.

Needless to say, when I got my own car (Ford Escort) some things happened:
I stopped having accidents:-\"
I became more cautious (most of the time)
My Dad called me one day and practically screamed into the phone "You've been terminated" in glee! I think the fact their Auto Insurance dropped by over 50% once they removed me from it has quite a bit to do with it!

My wife is teaching the kids how to drive....:lolflag:

We were coming back for the grocery store, the only reason I went was to get some Italian Ice. The groceries didn't make it, I was sore about that.

I said fender bender, but really it was a rub of someone who backed into me. Left a powder of the paint on the bumper and no real damage.

Otherwise I have never actually been in an accident with a moving vehicle while driving--unless being hit by a car while biking counts.

I had one accident where I turned left in front of a car hidden by a semi, totaled my car and got a hurt knee, but the van that hit me had a 6 year old girl that had a broken leg. I felt horrible!

My next car I was goin 35 or so (3rd gear), and spun out on some loose stones, and i ended up rolling the car in the ditch. Car was totaled, but everyone was fine.

I still dont like the side of the rode or turning left tho..;-)

We hit a small dog (Yorkshire Terrier, I think) on a fast, busy road. It's amazing how much damage such a small dog can do to a car. There was fluff hanging from the front bumper for weeks.

Just yesterday while driving home I was stopped in line at a 4-way intersection with a light. It had just rained and the roads were still wet.

I saw an SUV (Blazer? Ford? don't know) in the front of our line turned to go down the hill (to the left) when the light turned green and spun on the water! He was facing me (when he started) when he slid sideways out of my view.

I was really thankful I didn't hear the all-too-well-known sound of it hitting anything (maybe it hit the curb, but not bending metal)!

Glad you're ok from your accident..

I had some old guy backup at a stop street because he had stopped too far forward. If only he had bothered to look in his rear view mirror first.

Damage didn't appear serious at first, but unfortunately the bump had pushed the radiator against the car battery live wire. Some time a few weeks later while I was at a function, a message comes over the intercom:
" could the owner of car xxxxxx please check on your car as it's on fire "

Very embarrasing as I had to jump up and run ;)

I never had one that was my fault.

I hit a deer once. Insurance paid for it.

Got rear ended once, but no damage done to me or the car

That would be embarrasing, but it is more original than "Your lights are on".

I used to own a 1965 Chevrolet Impala station wagon. One day I was coming back from a trip to the store and had stopped at an intersection. All looked clear, so I began moving. About halfway across, I was hit by a guy on a motorcycle, doing about 65 miles per hour through what was a residential area. I survived, he survived, and the Impala survived. What was left of the motorcycle rained down for a brief moment.

I rear-ended someone in my Dad's (now mine) 98 Durango about 7 years ago.

Didn't do a whole lot of damage to the company vehicle I hit but cost me about $850 and a whole lot of greif, being a fairly new driver. The radiator is still bent inwards very visibly, too.

My first and so far only accident in 9 years of driving.

I've been in two wrecks, but neither were my fault.. I was rear-ended once, and and t-boned once.. never hurt, but the time I was rear-ended the hatch back of my car was about a foot behind me.. the car looked like an acordian.

Most of the accidents I've been in happened while someone else was driving, and other then ditching my car a few times when I was youngers, and something that happened recently, I haven't really been at the helm durring an accident. I do have a lot of good stories involving accidents, though.

When I was younger I had a 1980 Chevy Malibu, that was for all intents and purposes a hobby stock. In fact, the only things it would have needed to be legal on the track was a rollcage, dirt tires, and a smaller carb. Of course when the roads were empty I just loved that car, and thanks to a lifetime of detailed automotive lectures by my father, I was able to avoid the pitfalls that other teenagers fall into in that situation.

Unfortunately the car had a negative effect on some of my chums, as they often felt the need to try and race me whenever we went anywhere at night. Alot of my chums ended up bending their cars up while following me, and I decided that it was such a large problem that I made it my goal to always be behind everyone whenever we would travel.

I don't think it helped much, though, because one night a buddy of mine in his early 90's Jeep, and myself were on our way home after a very light rain. We were climbing a hill at about 80mph and as we approached the 90 degrea turn at its center my buddy failed to slow down. Right away, I let off my gas and drop about 100 feet behind him, then as he goes through the turn I drop back even more. As he exits the turn his rear end moved out about a foot, and then slowly slided back in behind him. Just as I breath a sigh of releif his rear continues to slide past center and gently touches the gaurdrail. Then suddenly he spins like a top across all three lanes and crashes into the mountainside, which kicked up a huge dust cloud. I pulled up past him enough for the people coming down around the hill to see my flashers and ran down to check on him. He was sitting there, in his Jeep, with his hands stiff to his sides just staring forward.

"Dude, are you alright?" I asked him.
"Ummm.... I dunno," he said, "Let me find my glasses first." and then he relaxed and started rumaging aorund for the glasses that had been knocked off his face.

Both him and the Jeep ended up being fine.

....err.. Perhaps I'm being too verbose. I'll come back to this thread later and maybe post some other stories, this one got too long.

spun across five lanes of rush hour traffic, into the guardrail and backwards about 200 yards (had to put on the brakes to stop). seven other cars and one guy thrown from his car. although my car was totalled, i was the only one able to drive home, though i was not facing the same direction in which i was driving. the only injury i had was to the arch of my right foot, but that was from slipping in dog mess the night before (good luck, according to some cultures).

I had an 97 S-10 that go T-boned on the passanger side and ended up laying on the driver's side when my truck finally came to rest. If I can find the pictures I will post them for everybody to see. All I got out of the accident was a little gash on my left arm.

I've only been in one (extremly minor thank god) car accident. It involved me doing a uturn (my dad yelling at me to go.. ironically to go pickup his car (we were right outside of the repair shop) that had bumper damage (his coworker hit it).

The result was my mom's (well technically my mom got it for my sister since she's short) corolla got bumper damage and I wound up scratching the back left side of a Buick (I think it was a Buick). Really really pissed me off though, since I was quite proud of not being in any accidents.
