View Full Version : Is it just me, or is this why a lot of people cannot find stuff...

I´ve just realised that through all of the searching that I´ve been doing on this forum, I haven´t been getting half of the results I´ve been after because I was searching for;
compiz cube not working correctly
It wasn´t until I looked closer that what I was actually searching for was;
compiz cube correctly
As the search has been taking ´not´ to mean ´-working´. Has anyone else noticed this or am I just a complete div? lol

I'm not a big fan of the built-in forum search. Doing a google search with 'site:ubuntuforums.org' always gets the job done though.

Hmmm. I have used google to search this forum, but I didn´t know about the ´site:ubuntuforums.org´ part. Iĺl give that a go on the next search and see how I get on!

I agree, the search tool is not as good as it should be.

I'm sure it's got worse, it's absolutely awful now though.
It seems to search for any of the keywords, rather than all of them.
It's very annoying as these forums are such a rich resource of information but without a decent search it's pretty much impossible to use!

Yeah I HATE the search box. It takes out random words, doesn't search on the whole string, and to add insult to injury, once you get the "No Results" page you're stuck staring at it for 15 seconds waiting to be able to try again.
Epic fail.

Speaking of the forum search, you have to admit that the "New Posts" search really hits the spot.

Thread moved to "Forum Feedback & Help".
The search function as been reverted some time ago back to pure vb search. From what I understood, it makes it easier to upgrade the forums software.

A google search would probably have done the same... don't most search engines (including google) use "not" as a keyword? If you want to use it as a search term instead, put it in quotes.
That said, the forum search isn't great. I hate having to wait 15 secs between searches, because if I try to be specific and turn up no results, I have to st and wait, and likewise if I am too general and turn up way too many. It seems more often than not I end up sitting there waiting. At least there is no captcha like some forums... those things are awful additions to search pages.

I noticed with wine they have a google search in wine which is an index of pages on the winhq site. This might improve Ubuntu searches. I was told a long time ago to search in the wiki's as the forum search is really weak. A Ubuntu google search with some indexing tricks might help out. Its kind of funny though as if I search my user name there are a lot of results lol.
