Has anyone else out there noticed that since Vi$ta was forced on the world that the updates for XP have dropped off to almost nothing? Seriously, 6 mos. ago when I was still just a Windoze user, there were "critical" security updates at least once every 3-4 days. Remember those days? I fired up in XP or the first time in 2 weeks today, let PC-cillan do the normal round of updates, and then told Windoze to check for updates manually to get that out of the way too so it didn't pop up in the middle of Doom 3. "No High-Priority Updates Available." Two weeks ago I got the same message. That's going on a month now folks.
Did this OS suddenly become secure and bug-free, or is M$ already renegging on its publicly-stated commitment to support XP for another 7 years?
P.S. Anybody willing to lend me a hand getting Doom going under Wine will have my unending respect and admiration. :)

You don't need Wine to play Doom.
Search in Synaptic for Doom.

XP is getting a service pack soon. After that XP will be about as good as it will ever get.. I certainly wont be downgrading to VISTA... ever. I only have 1windows box left.. and it will have XP on it until it rusts and falls apart.. heh

doom 3 != old doom (the old one is better heh)

Is it? What if they would just screw XP up? Or they could simply vistafy it by adding the annoying things to it. It could be the worst XP ever!

Maybe that's it. Am I just imagining this though, or have others noticed?

ms seems to be deliberately delaying xp sp3, though i believe versions have been 'leaked' to the internet, obviously the delays are to try to coax customers to go out and buy vista....

lol, is this another off-shoot of ubuntu?

Well, this is mature... ;)

There's no need to call OS's names, at least not on this forum - while many would share your sentiments (espacially about windows and some about ubuntu) it's unnecessary...

Also, can we *please* stick to Microsoft, Windows, MS or M$ (a forgive the last because it's an abbreivation, and the dolar is an almost internationally recognised sign of MS, besides, you could be taliking about multiple-sclerosis otherwise).

Windoze, winblows, and Micor$oft are not needed thankyou.

However, in reply to the original post, yes I have noticed the drop off, but I guesses that with the sevice pack coming up that was the reason...

Whats Micro$oft, Vi$ta and Windoze ?

I quite like Windows, and never had a problem with Vista personally.

The same arguments do the rounds EVERY time Microsoft launch a new OS (and to a certain extent every time a linux distro is updated / Kernel version comes out)

They all have a place in the modern world of computing, and it annoys me when I see people using $'s etc... and leet speak

But the complaints on vista are almost a match for windows ME,

MS got to be the only company that literaly adds anti customer features to their operating system and still make a bunch of money, nothing will change that, sorry MS will not go broke tomorrow.

Try checking up for updates once on the first Tuesday of every month. This is done primarily to benefit large deployments of Windows so that admins can test and deploy updates on their network without breaking a thing.

Uhhh...Microsoft is the company, Windows is a product they make.

The updates should still be available on the update site though. I haven't been told I need anything in over a month now, and my previous experience with it tells me that doesn't jive at all....
Oh well, I'm back home in 'Buntu as I write this, so I'll find out in another two weeks when I feel like running games again. :)

I'm only aware of the SP1 coming out for Vista which was pretty much forced by the gov. XP you can expect two updates/patches a month and that's about it.

A lot has to do w/ their support timeline:

http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-us&x=13&y=11

The funny thing is XP was released in 2002 which puts its mainstream support end at 2007 and add'l support for another five years. The tricky thing is XPSP2 is kind of like considered a separate product from XP & XPSP1 released 2002 & 2003 respectively. SP2 being released in 2004 would normally put its lifecycle at 2009... I don't know why I care, probably reading too much into it...

From what I've heard XP Service Pack 3 won't include many if any "features" at all.. it'll mostly be a rollup of all the hotfixes, updates, and patches since SP 2, plus several new fixes and such. I doubt they'd include too many Vista features in XP anyways.. then what would be the incentive to switch to Vista.. ever? Althought I wouldnt say no to DX10 on my XP MCE Box. :)

gg ...these fanboys really need a reminder of the fact that linus torwalds is not god and that ubuntu is not heaven. Poking fun at ms continuously does not make you cool, it just proves that you are too frustrated and feel you are so much smarter than the average windows user because you have mastered the incredibly hard task of using one of the most idiot-proof linux distros ever made (no, dont tell me that you also used linspire and xandros).

In a more on-topic fashion; yes, of course ms wont be so happy about updating xp in the future, they want ppl to buy their new os, dont they?
