I updated my dads Dell desktop from Windows HE to Windows XP Pro and now for some reason the Hewlett Packard scanner software no longer works, it won't launch no matter what I do. (I double click on the .exe file or try to launch it from the start menu and nothing happens).

I know there is a way to use a scanner through Photoshop but it would be too complicated for my dad.

Anyone know if there is open source software out there that would work with an HP scanjet 3500c ?

Thanks very much.

xsane (http://www.xsane.org/) is best choice for GNU/Linux and I see there also is a WIN32-version..

Upgrading from ME to XP Pro without wiping and doing a clean install is not advisable at all, you'll be much better off with a clean install.

Software and driver compatible with that scanner on XP can be found here. (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software2/COL3927/sj-13026-3/col3927.exe)

I did do a clean install, perhaps some of the wording was poorly chosen, and I did use the software and drivers from HP but as I said, they don't seem to work for some reason.

Since posting this I started playing around with Photoshop to see how it works as scanner software and I must say it is much simpler than I thought. First of all the scanner reacts much faster, the lamp warms up faster with Photoshop than when I used the original HP software. Secondly it's a very simple process.

I have yet to try out the win32 version of Xsane.

Did you try running them in Compatibility mode?

Right click the exe file (or a shortcut to it, select properties, and to the Compatibility tab, and select "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select the last version of Windows it ran ok on.
