I think I'll spend Sunday reading reviews (with screenshots) of fifteen different distributions. No?

Then I'll install Gutsy.

custom debian liveCDs are great but with no installer it isn't as fun as custom ubuntu liveCDs IMO.

Trying to learn how to stop using a mouse as much as possible and today I will focus on that as much as possible. Besides that, working on something neat (i hope) similar to getdebs, web based front, uses gdebi to install, works on any deb based distro...etc...

In PC-BSD the other day I set it up to us the num pad to control my pointer, eliminating the need for a mouse.

I believe you can do this in any KDE DE

EDIT: yes you can do this in any KDE DE....KDE control center>Peripherals>mouse>Mouse Navigation>select, "Move pointer with keyboard(using the num pad)>apply

See the screenshot below (KDE 4.0 on Mepis)

LOL....I have never laughed so hard!

So far I have tried JUXlala! and it has exceeded my expectations, I have never enjoyed a distro as much as JUXlala!....wonderful for kids of all ages.

A great application of Fluxbox

I am now trying Mepis and KDE 4.0...well a taste of KDE 4.0

I have to say it is absolutely amazing!

lol, I don't think I could ever try 15 distros in one day, but I did install the latest kernel today (2.6.23rc2, for the third time... but this one is a keeper!), installed the latest intel wireless (iwlwifi, be warned, it's still a bit buggy and doesn't play nice with network manager and isn't fully supported by the iwconfig in feisty) and then the drivers for my camera. I've been considering getting rid of my arch partition so I can try out ext4.

Well, Sunday is nearly over for me. I spent six hours of it in airplanes and airports and am using my final waking hour back at home to catch up on forum posts. I am looking forward to hearing about Comfusion and the new Mepis. I totally blew my 10Gb download limit last month downloading too many distros but the meter has been reset (and upgraded to 20Gb) so I'm back in business!

Hey guys! I'm still pretty new 2 linux (Feisty being the first distro I've ever tried) I've completely switched over on my laptop (Dell B130 Inspiron) and I was just wondering which other distros you guys would suggest for an i386?

1gb ram
60gb partition
1.3ghz celeron

I just want another alternative, something that will give me a good reason to learn more about the capabilities of linux.. I basically plan to jus surf the net, watch movies, listen 2 music and stuff like that

Try Puppy, Knoppix and PClinuxOS 2007. All run well in Live CD. Puppy is just 90 MB, tough to install, runs great from Live CD. I have not tried to install others but Live CD is fine.

RAV TUX,

It took me years to move from FC, through SuSE, then to Ubuntu!

Have you not forgotten Linux Mint (Cassandra) in your tests?

Mint is #8 on DistroWatch, and has been moving up for a while now. It has all that goodness not found in your usual Live CD e.g. codecs, and Beryl.

You might want to try it.

Thank you. I actually looked and looked how to do that as a global xorg thing that works with any wm/de but have been unable to figure it out. Awesome to see it in KDE, someone said it is available in gnome but I have been unable to figure it out or even find it actually.

I guess I will add that to my list today as well. Thanks again!

So if the arrow keys move your pointer how do you scroll a webpage of other window?

Ubuntu is great for that. But Mepis is also good. So is BLAG. It's hard to suggest just one, that's why I try so many. DSL does what you want, and is very small. Also try Oz Linux. And Vector.

Try Linux Mint Cassandra. That has Beryl as the desktop Manager, not E17, which has never been final.

Linux Mint e17 beta 1......578mb downloaded on 07/09/07

Update on my Distro odyssey:

6. Wolvix Hunter-didn't boot, works on my old computer but not my newer computer
7. PC-BSD 1.4 Beta-wouldn't boot...so I installed PC-BSD 1.3.01 after installing it wouldn't completely boot..I lost patience with PC-BSD on my newer computer(I have this installed on my old computer)
8. fluxbuntu-nbuild-rev2-wouldn't boot
9. Vyatta-wouldn't boot

I have installed Xubuntu, the fact that Xubuntu works on my computer is quite surprising, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Fluxbuntu will not even load on my newest computer....

Xubuntu is very nice but I have not used a Ubuntu derivative for so long I have to refimiliarize myself,...and figure out how to install Opera, it used to be in the Synaptic Package Manager but now I don't see it and the Synaptic Package Manager has changed since I last used it...

I will hold off on testing any further and become more fimilar with Xubuntu and the XFCE environment...

So I am official using Xubuntu and PC-BSD for now....

I'm giving Ubuntu one more chance on my computer...liking it so far. Snappy, and you don't notice what you're missing until you're back, I guess: My voloume buttons AND brightness keys work seamlessly with the system, and nothing is breaking (yet).

I do like how, with Ubuntu, you get the enterprise-level desktop experience (professional website, forums, and documentation) for free.

Any distro can use sudo like Ubuntu does, all you need is 'sudo' and the '/etc/sudoers' from Ubuntu, and it should act like you expect it to.

Fedora takes up too many CD's and space for me to use it. I tried FC1 awhile back, and that was good because it had so many features. I didn't have an internet connection on that laptop (or the Linux desktop either).

To see if a CD is good or not:
Insert the CD into your drive and then

sudo apt-get install qemu
qemu -cdrom /dev/cdrom

This will emulate the CD. If it hangs in emulation, the CD is bad. If not, Wolvix simply does not work with you computer.

To see if a CD is good or not:
Insert the CD into your drive and then
Code:

sudo apt-get install qemu
qemu -cdrom /dev/cdrom

This will emulate the CD. If it hangs in emulation, the CD is bad. If not, Wolvix simply does not work with you computer. [/quote]

Qemu is good for some CD's but larger CD's like Kubuntu will not load.

i know this is probably a very n00bish question buuuuuuut, (all of my prior questions have been so why stop now =] ) is it at all possible to add KDE to my existing version of feisty (gnome) ? I don't want to replace gnome, i just wanted to know if i could switch between the two (like on the log in screen)

Thanks !!

I tested ReactOS 0.3.3 RC in QEMU today, along with going through its changelog ( Lots of fixes! ) As well as Re-organize my desktop/home folder.

Yes. I wondered this too when I installed multiple Environments. Install the environment of your choice, then log out. In GDM ( the first thing shown and system startup ) Navigate to "sessions" and choose the Desktop environment you wish to start :)

This will not replace anything, nor is it dangerous to the system.

Good luck!

You can do this with Oz Enterprise 1.0 (http://OzEnterprise.com/).

dakuran,

That question could lead to about as many responses, as to What's Your Favorite Distro?

I prefer GNOME, others, well...

What I meant is that Oz Enterprise already has GNOME and KDE by default, what you do upon install is choose the install everything option, then you only have to restart X to go into either GNOME or KDE.

restart X=ctrl+alt=backspace

dakuran,

You can try Enlightenment (http://www.enlightenment.org/).

But, then have you tried Beryl or compiz-Fusion yet? You certainly can do that with GNOME, and KDE.

Lot's of things to pick from out there?

Yeah,

Beryl is what I'm using in gnome and kde, i was just wondering if there were any other biggies out there that I should know about

I have Elive installed too, which uses enlightenment, so far, I really like beryl. I'm just trying to test out other distros/environments.

Thank you for your patience

dakuran,

You can try compiz-fusion. That's the Beryl replacement. That'll keep you busy for a while. LOL!

Yeah, the thing is I work so darn much, that when I get home I really look forward to playing around w/stuff on my laptop... I've been booting in kubuntu 4 the past few days and I must admit its growing on me.. but its all good-n-fun till school starts... then its back to the books and i'll be too busy to mess around as much as I'd like to..

Once again Thank You for your response..
