Why Is PCLinuxOS 2007 Better Than Ubuntu ?
(Ubuntu feisty vs PCLinuxOS 2007)

Hello guys...

I am one of Linux enthusiast like you people, and have used almost all major Linux distros in past.

Currently I triple boot Windows XP/ Ubuntu Feisty /PCLinuxOS 2007.

I am very impressed with PCLOS 2k7, even more than i was with Ubuntu. So i though why not write something which may help other people....

So here it goes as if why PCLOS 2k7 is better than Ubuntu :

{All things written below are completely my own views, based on my experiences with Linux and Windows, during past years and are no way related to PCLinuxOS OS or Ubuntu developers, or any other person or company mentioned below.}

1. First reason, PCLOS is based on KDE, while Ubuntu is based on GNOME.

And the hard truth is that KDE is definitely better than GNOME. ( I know die hard GNOME users must be frowning). Well, I have points to prove :

(i). KDE gives so much power and options to user to configure their system and desktop, while GNOME in their goal of striving hard for simplicity (unnecessarily and sometimes more than required) cripples normal user (sometime even Linux geeks) in terms of above said parameters. KDE Control center gives far more options than GNOME.
Even Mr. Linus Trovald supports this fact in public and encourages users to use KDE( google it to read Linus's comments.)

(ii). KDE developers are far more active than GNOME people.
This is evident by the fact that KDE is going to release its 4th version (which is a major release, a complete overhaul,i mean everything has been reviewed), while GNOME has no plans of releasing even 3rd version.

(iii). Lots of day to day used apps, like media player, torrent client, file manager, are far superior in KDE. To name a few, Amarok vs. Rhythymbox, Ktorrent vs (hey GNOME doesn't even has a torrent client), Konqueror vs Nautilus, Gaim/Pidgin vs Kopete.... Almost everywhere KDE apps surpass over GNOME apps.

(iv). Now explanations to some of facts for which KD is criticized by GNOME users mostly :

a. KDE is more like Windows.
Well first of all its not true. Because Windows itself copies all things from Mac, but you can't do anything about that, because Mac people are almost always first to bring innovation in GUI. And if Mac people were first to develop the GUI [Graphic User Interface] (rather they also bought it from Xerox company in 80's). So everything traces back to roots and looks similar. And GNOME doesn't look like Windows because GNOME in first place doesn't give many options in GUI. You know, GNOME's philosophy is simplicity.

So better allegation would be that KDE is more like Mac. But believe me fellas, KDE people bring the best of all, along with their own innovations.

b. KDE is slower than GNOME.
Again same explanation, if you need power to configure, you need to have tools to do that. And it needs, both memory and processing. And i use both GNOME and KDE, i don't see or feel much difference.

2. PCLOS has far more stability than Ubuntu. Reasons for that :

(i). PCLOS repository has softwares which have been tested by PCLOS developers completely, while Ubuntu has so many repositories available today, (though it is good in a sense that Ubuntu has max. no of softwares available), that there are very high chances that some program or library dependency from unofficial repository may cause trouble to your system. (OK, this is not for geeks..... BUT this is hell lot of problem for newbies, and mid-experienced users....)

(ii). PCLOS is .rpm based which is better and more efficient packaging model for Linux binaries, than .deb, used by Ubuntu.

[Lot of people may not agree with this. So i want to clear that this is what i have learned from my personal experience, and research on Internet. So your thoughts are equally respected on this.]

3. PCLOS comes pre-installed with most of commonly used multimedia formats(except real player, quick time, and mpg), while Ubuntu doesn't.

This point gives PCLOS a great push ahead of Ubuntu. Its too convenient in conditions like:

(i). Newbies who when using Linux for first time, just get shot when they see that their brand new Linux OS is not playing their favorite songs(mp3).

(ii). Now you will say, person above may simply double click the song, and Ubuntu will automatically install required binaries. True. But, just Imagine someone in developing nation, where Internet penetration is not good or not even available. How do you provide required binaries, as there are always dependencies involved in any Linux binary installation ? Will those people ever replace their perfectly running PIRATED Windows XP in such scenario ? Well, the answer is, NEVER.....

[I could never understand why doesn't Ubuntu pre-installs required multimedia formats. Legal Issues ? Well, i think , they are already getting into legal issues by providing it in repositories. so why not on CD ? May be some complex legal stuff..... if anyone kind enough to explain to me...]

5. PCLOS control center is a big and easy tool to configure system with just few clicks, while
there is not anything analogous in Ubuntu.

6. Some things which i personally experienced with my own system:

(i). PCLOS automatically detected that i needed a software to correct my screen resolution, while Ubuntu didn't.
(ii). PCLOS automatically configured my laptop touchpad correcly, while in Ubuntu, i had to edit x org file to get it working good. For newbies out there, its a nightmare to even find that file without any help from forums or people.
(iii). PCLOS detected my wireless card while Ubuntu didn't.
(iv). On PCLOS, i could run 3d desktops (beryl and compiz) right after install while in Ubuntu i had to install these things from repositories.
(v). On PCLOS i can run even 2 or 3 videos with 3d desktop enabled, while in Ubuntu, whenever i even clicked a video file to play, it would simply exit without anything playing. ( I have a little old laptop with no separate graphic card)
This thing made me a fan of PCLOS. I thought while using Ubuntu that i will never be able to use 3d desktop on permanent basis but with PCLOS i am a complete 3d convert.

[For newbies : 3d desktop on Linux are freaking awesome. Windows vista with its too much hyped "Live Thumbnails in Taskbar" and "Aero Flip Through Windows" should be ashamed. I mean guys, it nothing in front of Linux 3d desktops. And Microsoft spends 5 BILLION DOLLARS on research (did u read that !).
Do check out some videos on you tube. Vista users will feet like scratching their brand new Vista DVD by their own hand after seeing these videos..... So be cautious, Vista victims.......]

(v). I couldn't get flash videos playback with sound on Ubuntu, even after installing same codecs as on PCLOS, and doing all possible tweaks. PCLOS played it like a charm right after install......
(vi). With PCLOS i could select what things not to install (like i kinda don't like open office) during installation by simply uninstalling that software from synaptic, while i couldn't achieve same thing in Ubuntu.

7. What Surprises Me Really As if why Ubuntu hasn't been able to do same things despite the facts that ;

(i). PCLOS just originated in 2003 while Ubuntu is there from such a long time back.
(ii). Ubuntu is supported and developed by multimillionaire Mark Shuttleworth and his company Canonical, while PCLOS is developed by some great Linux geek fellas(Texter and ripper gang as they call themselves). I mean where is all that money being spent.
I respect Mark Shuttleworth a lot and am a regular reader of his blog. It seems he needs to audit his company great time.
(iii). Some big computer manufacturer like Dell (and recently Lenovo) and are supporting Ubuntu.

8. Why Has Then Ubuntu Become So Much Popular than Other Linux Distros like OpenSUSE, Mandriva. Well i see few reasons which led to that ;

(i). Mark Shuttleworth decision of sending out free Ubuntu Cd's without any cost in any part of World. This had a huge impact, because it led to wide adoption of Ubuntu in developing nations where people have Internet access but not of broadband like people in developed nations. People out there on their dial up connections could simply request Ubuntu installation Cd's on Ubuntu websites, and get them at their home for free.
(ii). Even today, Ubuntu is definitely second best to PCLOS as:
(a). single CD operating system unlike OpenSUSE or Red hat.
(b). Big community support which has developed over time due to Ubuntu's wide reach attributed to point 8(ii). And MIND YOU....... there is no doubt that Ubuntu's community support is definitely largest and best......you post a query at ubuntuforums.org, and you get the response within minutes......

(iii). And above all, PCLOS hadn't arrived before 2003.................

Hope this article will help newbies to make a right decisions by choosing PCLinuxOS 2007 as their first distro, and already Linux convert to switch or at least give a try to PCLOS 2k7 ( did someone said "distro hoping")......

Before I read and respond to your post, I feel the need to let you know that your post title is a false logical construct. I forget the exact name of this method, but I compare it with the "Do your parents know that you're gay?" joke. It means that you're asking a question with an implied truth in it, so whoever answers your question is asserting the validity of this truth.

actually I disagree on some things.
for one I like Gaim/Pidgin WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more then kopete, there is something about kompete that I just dont like.
RPM is something that has proven a burden to so many distros, the dependency hell in Suse and redhat annoy the heck out of me, I much prefer debian systems but this is because of apt.
Apt and synaptic are two of the things that got me into linux, especially synaptic as honestly a child can use the thing.
Its synaptic and apt that brought be to PCLOS for the time being, as I am a former ubuntu user at my current state (feisty really sucked on my compy, waiting on gutsy and the next LTS release to see if I will ever return to ubuntu)
another thing to remember why Ubuntu doesnt come with multimedia support out of the box is its open source nature, there is a lot of controversy over distros that ship proprietary apps and codecs so its all a matter of who runs the distro that makes it.
Of course I wont argue there are better distros out there for beginners then Ubuntu, if you are a fresh off windows user you might want a distro that has all you need just as soon as you install it.
For the ultra super beginner I personally would recommend say... Mepis over ubuntu, though due to its low amount packages in its repositories I would recommend Ubuntu only slightly higher then PCLOS for those folks who like the cutting edge stuff.
PCLOS does have great hardware detection, this is mainly from it being an offspring of Mandriva.
but in the end its all about what works for you, if ubuntu works for people better then PCLOS then let them.
I think the biggest advantages ubuntu has over PCLOS comes in two shapes:
1: a MASSIVE package repo, PCLOS's repo is minuscule in comparison
2: cross platform support, Ubuntu supports many types of processors and architectures while PCLOS only supports intel or intel based computers

I used PCLOS for the last 8 months (xubuntu previously), and my experience was ...

The things in PCLOS work extremely well. If you like what it offers, it's a hard distribution to beat. But if you want to add something that's not included, it's much more difficult (perhaps because I don't have any Mandriva background). It seems nothing resides where it 'belongs' based on other distros, and the support is not very widespread - the forums are very good if you stay in the PCLOS mainstream. So it's an excellent distro to move from Windows, and things just work.

What I found with *buntu, is a lot of things take a LOT of tweaking. Applications get altered to add security, and often you have to fight your way through that. I also find in *buntu (this is the most frustrating) that seeking a fix may give a half dozen ways to deal with a problem, and half are obsolete. There's a LOT of bad info about *buntu on the net. But... if you're willing to work at it, you can get just about ANYTHING working in *buntu. So there's something to be said for that.

If you're new to Linux, PCLOS is a sweet distro. Most of the 'tools' work very well, and you can basically, just use the distro as delivered.

If you've got a little experience behind you, and you've got a lot of tenacity, then you can get further with *buntu, if you want to go further than what's delivered on the installation CD.

those, of course, are my 2 cents and others will certainly feel otherwise, as they should...

Half of what you posted above is opinion, from which holds absolutely no ground. Why?
YOU CAN'T COMPARE APPLES TO ORANGES!

KDE has certain goals, Gnome has certain goals. And don't call me a die hard Gnome fan, because I run KDE on Ubuntu (not a fan of Kubuntu all that much ATM).

And PCLinuxOS integrates codec's ILLEGALY. Since most users who use PCLinuxOS are from the U.S., Canada, Europe, etc. (exept for Canada, I think those codecs are legal there.)

Also, developing nations probably have no idea what Windows is compared to Linux. I guess you haven't heard, but Ubuntu is leading the way with the 1 laptop per child for developing nations. Using either Ubuntu or Impi Linux (African version of Ubuntu).
+1 for Ubuntu

Never post Why is this better than this. Because its like saying "Do your parents know your gay" joke. And it sounds like your trying to flame the community, be careful.

I like XFCE more than KDE and find it superior. That beats your statement.
Ever heard of Deluge? It's like Utorrent but written in GTK! Beat again.
Ubuntus repos are more superior, more complete, more stable and .deb. Beat your statement again.
And Ubuntu has a big company behind it's back. You can get Professional-support, it won't die because those working on it have no more freetime.
Afaik those Codecs are legal here in Europe to.

I used the same analogy in the "Why is Linux Mint so much better..." thread and nobody was offended, but I'll have to be careful I guess. If it's of any help, seldom does anyone over the age of 10 use that joke, and I don't refer to the joke with the intention of in any way bashing gays. If I were homophobic at all, I'd probably suffocate where I live :^)

about massive package repo, u shouldn't forget that Ubuntu has been there such a long time as comaperd to pclos, as i mentioned reviously also......those guys are constantly adding apps.......

and about pclos not supporting other architecture, Ubuntu has strong support of canonical to go for uncomman things to support..... and pclos is developed by few Linux geeks only...

and i can't understand why Ubuntu hasn't been able to do the same despite having all resources, time and other things......

don't get me wrong guys........

have no intention of FLAMING UP THE COMMUNITY...... or anything like that......

just wanted to share the thing......

dint know that ubuntu community is so intolerable to people's opinion.

you din't notice that i myself uses Ubuntu as my 2nd OS.

so no hard feelings if anyone thinks like that......

instead of you guys simply writing back with intention of discussion seems to be more interested in bashing me......

Again, don't compare apples to oranges.
Ubuntu is supposed to be free, easy, safe, and simple to use. Not to mention to be completely open source on a vanilla installation.

Ubuntu got most of its support from Debian, not Canonical, which is multi architecture.

PCLinuxOS could easily just Merge packages from Mandriva repo's to add to its own repo's. As that is how Ubuntu adds packages to its repo's. Merged from Debian with a slightly changed binary.

Ubuntu packages are also easier to develop (.deb) than PCLinuxOS (.rpm). And I stand as a witness for it.

Then why do you write such a post?
It's biased by your opinions.
The contents can be cut down to, PClos is better nanananana.
The style the contents, everything is written like a typical Flamepost.

Could you please re-post your reasons for preferring one over the other in a simple numbered-list format? It's very, very hard to get through your original post, and a more concise post would help out a lot. I personally think that PCLinuxOS is a better distro for the following reasons:

It's a KDE distro, which makes it instantly more functional than a GNOME distro
By improving the Mandriva base, a very nice distro is made. Layering quality and user-friendliness can't help but to have great results
It's aimed at users who care more about easy compatibility than what RMS is preaching
Slightly superior job of matching the user's hardware and system services
Default software selection: This one's not even close. Much more software is included, and for the most part, the included software is all superior.

And reasons I think Ubuntu is better:

More software available (huge repos.)
Compatible with more hardware
Builds for many additional architectures
What they've done compared to a vanilla GNOME install is very impressive
All the benefits that come with using Debian as a base
Better community

i am sorry but is expressing your opinion in an open forum equivalent to flaming up things ?

and i am just trying to write down what i have experienced. tell me or even bash me where i am genuinely wrong. i will accept.

dint i say that ubuntu has max. no of apps available ?

dint i say ubuntu community support is largest and best ?

dint i say ubuntu ceated a huge impact by sending out free cd's to people across world ?

dint i accepet that ubuntu supports wider range of hardwares ?

but no, that doesn't count !!!

when i say saomthing comparing, which is true, and even you know that its true, you will blow over me because you are an ubuntu fan......

can you give single explanation to the differences i wrote in point no. 6 on my sytem, leave apart other things which may be generalised.

I stopped reading when you said that KDE devs were more active than GNOME, shown by KDE4 being released soon.
Gnome Devs have decided not to start a gnome 3, because at this point they don't feel its necessary/don't want to break things with API changes etc. etc. etc.

Ubuntu also comes with KDE packages.sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktopor just use a Kubuntu cd.
don't get me wrong guys........

have no intention of FLAMING UP THE COMMUNITY...... or anything like that......I don't know what you expected.

I'm closing this thread as flamebait. I think I won't be merging it into the desktop readiness though.
