Hello, I'm running dual boot with Windows XP so I can run Microsoft Flight Simulator X I'm gonna check out X-Plane, I've seen it before and it looks pretty good. I've been looking for a Flightsim for UBUNTU.:)

I bought the X-Plane 9 cds. But caveat emptor! There is no linux binary for the 9.xx series at this point. If you buy 8 it I suppose it should work (the 8 demo worked fine for me). As it is, I'm stuck with an installed program that doesn't work (and I've confirmed as much on the x-plane.org forums).

Personally think I got suckered. Unless you just want the fancy graphics or you think the blade element theory of flight modeling is so fantastic, go with FlightGear.

I own a copy of X-Plane, and its a shelf dust collector.

Flightgear , when I play a flightsim, is what I play.

X-Plane is a fantastic flight-sim and it will work fine under Linux, however only the version you buy directly from Laminar Research. There are other 'retail' versions of it with either Windows or Mac installers, but the Laminar one will have the Linux installer. You have to have a fairly advanced openGL video card (nVidia GEForce 4800 and up), lots of drive space and at least 1 GB memory if you get the 6 DVD's with global scenery (60 GB).
The program installs itself NOT as an application, but a folder in the filesystem. To start it, you need to run the executable in a terminal as root.
It will run fine in Gutsy (8.04) bvut NOT in Intrepid (8.10)
