I've heard a lot of reports about 8.10 having a slower boot time, but for some reason, installing 8.10 actually shaved ~10 seconds off of my boot time.

My bump time is still 20 seconds though.

I don't care about boot times. If it take me four hours, yes, but under five min is ok. If it has a super short boot time but takes 85 secs to load DSL's home page, we have a problem.

Problem also exists in 8.04....

sstusick
November 15th, 2008, 04:39 PM
lol, I'll try...

Say I have a window in the foreground, ok? And there is a window in the background, behind it. The window in the front is not as big as the window in the back.. now say I want to do something in the window in the back, I click somewhere inside that window..and you would think that that window would be brought to the foreground, right? Wrong..it stays in the background and the only way to bring it to the front is by minimizing the windows in front of it or clicking on the window border.. very odd behavior, it sure as hell wasn't like this in any previous version of Ubuntu.
There it is.

I'm having this really annoying problem with 8.04.

My $HOME/.dmrc file is being ignored because it supposedly has some permission errors. I tried to fix them then I moved the file. When that didn't work I renamed it. When that didn't work, I deleted it. That doesn't fix it and the file is not being recreated. Its just annoying, it doesn't seem to change much. This only seems to happen after I do a backup, which I did a while ago. Any ideas?

While I'm not sure about the GPU's impact on VM performance, I know you'll need a good processor (the Q9300 is one) and a lot of RAM (if you really wanted to you could get 8GB).

I would recommend getting a Newegg account and playing around with some different setups in different wish lists. Then you can compare the overall prices and possibly save yourself some cash.
