Ok, so I've wanted to do a Photoshop exercise in advertising for a while, and so I finally got into gear and made some. I'm not crazy about the first one, but I even impressed my mom with the third one.

Everaldo for his house icon
The makers of the Augi font.
The makers of Open Logo font
Ubuntu, SuSE, Mandriva, Red Hat and Fedora (logos)
Dell for the laptop*
First one made in GIMP, second and third made in Adobe Photoshop CS2.
And now, enjoy:

I couldn't upload the sources because I don't have a server. If anyone is able to host two PSDs and an XCF, could you contact me by PM?
Constructive criticism?
*None of the makers have been contacted as to the use of their material. Please contact them if you wish to use the stuff, which as far as my contribution goes is GPL.

I like the second one the best. Reason is: your third one is a little hard to read the farther towards the middle you get. This is the only reason, though! These are *really* good. I got an assignment in my graphics class to give a partner a topic for an ad (I get one too) and I gave her ubuntu! We will have to see how it turns out. ;)

I like the graphics of each, didn't have time to read the fine print yet. I especially like how you didn't just showcase ubuntu, you had several distros on there. Mad props!

Does she know anything about Ubuntu? Let us know how that ad turns out ;)

She knows what linux is (though she doesn't agree with the theories behind open source!), but she is going to work hard on the ad because she wants a good grade ;)

Absolutely outstanding!
Really nice work, great points made in them, and I think the one about being green is a sorely overlooked benefit of Linux in this day and age.
Can we use those? I live right next to a University and would really like to pass those out.

Again, feel free. But I'd contact my credits for permission. I don't think Everaldo would have a problem since it's for Linux promotion, Tux is GPL, and I'm quite sure you're allowed to use the logos.
But I saw some spelling mistakes (in instead of is). I'll fix them up and repost them.
But if you use them, could you send a picture of them hanging up to me? I'd just like to put that in my portfolio :D
And I'll post the full size versions. These are scaled down for the Web.
EDIT: Links to full-size posters:
http://www.mediafire.com/?b691m3z11o5 (Freedom of Choice)
http://www.mediafire.com/?21gwuezdtzn (Compute with Nature)
http://www.mediafire.com/?fn94gyrj4xn (Linux gives you the whole house)
Changes: Switched "in" to "is" and added a question mark in Freedom of Choice
Made text in Compute with Nature easier to read.
Resolutions vary because I just found out my laptop could handle 8.5x11 at 300ppi, and so compute with nature is at 72 ppi, house is at 150 ppi, and freedom of choice is at 300ppi

Ah, I missed that part in your first post, sorry.
Ok, I'll try to contact them and find out.
Awesome, the new versions look great, you're right, much easier to read.
Sure! When Fall session starts up at the University I'll go around and put them up (if I get permission from your credits) and I'll send you a pic or two, no problem. I'd hang them up now but there is no one at the school to see them in summer, lol.
Again, great work, Linux could always use a little promo. Too bad we can't get people to do Linux Street Teams, it would awesome to see a massive multi-city linux flyer posting campaign.

Just checked:
Everaldo's icon is GPL
http://www.crystalxp.net/galerie/num.4538.htm
Augie is GPL
http://thelinuxbox.org/?page_id=3
Open Logos (font, perhaps not the actual logos) are GPL
http://gnomelook.org/content/show.php/OpenLogos?content=54390
That leaves the distributer. I know you can do the Ubuntu logo, and I'm sure about Fedora as it's free anyways, but I don't know about Red Hat, Mandriva and SuSE. But I'm sure it would be ok since you're promoting them.

Awesome, thanks for checking!
I'll poke around the others sites and see, but yeah, you're probably right, if they're getting free promo they probably don't care. lol

"Microsoft gives you Windows, Linux gives you the whole house"
Wouldn't something like:
"Microsoft gives you Windows, Linux gives you a home" be more appropriate, referring to the /home directory?

Did you take the picture of the background on "Computing with Nature"? If not, where did you get it? j/w, because I got an inspiration from your ad, and need a wood counter looking out in a similar fasion to the nature scene.

The second one is great for the overall distros. I like the hole house thing although the home thing will work too. I will like the first one to be giving the enfasis to one distro, diferent colors looks to white and maybe less wording and more communication with the graphics like the second one. The third one hard to read more color, but the info is great.
Oh, member you are not trying to make a book!!!
Overall I give you 8.9

Welcome to Linux, the only operating system you will ever need. There are many distros to choose from, including Ubuntu, Suse, and Mandrivia. Finding the perfect one is just a download away. So try a Linux distro today!

The perspective between the laptop and table is off. It looks like the laptop is leaning forward.
I'm not sure about the background on the laptop, maybe just have Tux with the sign.

Great Posters. You're doing really good.
There is one thing you need to change in my humble opinion.
Instead of saying Open Office, you should write OpenOffice.org
The reason are three reason why you should say OpenOffice.org instead of OpenOffice. One, OpenOffice is a trademarked by someone else not related to OpenOffice.org.
Two, saying OpenOffice.org will show the reader the HomePage for OO.o
Three, the OFFICIAL name for OpenOffice, is OpenOffice.org. I remember reading somewhere in OpenOffice.org website saying Quote "Open Office? I bet they meant OpenOffice.org"
Quote from English wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenOffice.org):
The project and software are informally referred to as "Open Office", but project organizers report that this term is a trademark held by another party, requiring them to adopt "OpenOffice.org" as its formal name.

I guess you don't realize Red Hat Charges people for linux, so don't label it as free. I find it to be the microsoft of linux, and therefore pure evil.

Simply change it to fedora. BTW, there's nothing wrong with charging people for linux, Canonical used to (and I believe it still does): http://www.ubuntu.com/support/paid
