View Full Version : Awesome idea for Ubuntu Linux Ad

This morning while playing around with the new Compiz Fusion, I was struck with an awesome idea for a linux/ubuntu commercial. This will parody on the HP notebook commercials that are already out:
eg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4mStrgvzXs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oaybo46kMC8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIYD3k-zGxA
Here's the idea, but no content (I have very limited graphics skill):
Record an awesome Compiz Fusion desktop using one of those video screen capture programs. Add opacity to the recorded video. Record a video of yourself using your hands to navigate the cube, drag windows around the sides of the cube, choose a song, watch a video, etc in a similar style to the HP commercials (doing so very naturally).
At the very end of the ad, move your hand to the top of the cube and rotate it downward, displaying a PNG that says "Ubuntu", "Linux", or the like.
What do you think?
PS: heres a few more hp ads:

I'm going to guess that it would be a bit misleading, because while compiz-fusion is available, it still in beta, and not installed by default.
Plus in order for this idea to work, you'd need some sort of invisible (or at least not recorded) mouse to actually move the windows, chose a song, etc.
Which is the core thing that bothers me in the Vista Vs Linux Youtube videos. Where they show the effects of Vista vs the effects of Ubuntu, but with Compiz-Fusion, which isn't a fair comparison.

I thought it was going to be the default window manager in Gutsy?

It will be IN gutsy, but not default. You will have to turn it on yourself.

If it was by default, a lot of systems wouldn't be able to run it. Since some systems require proprietary drivers that will not be shipped with it.

Compiz will never be on by default until it can be guaranteed that it will work with most graphics cards with no messing with xorg.conf, and that won't be happening anytime soon.

still would be very cool, i know that you can get istanbul to record minus the mouse cursor. If you give me an exact storyboard eg which apps to open then i might try it...

Compiz Fusion will be enable by default in gusty.
What are you all guys talking about?

What about Saybayon? that is a Gentoo based distro w/ Beryl enabled by default, I mean, what if in the install process, Gutsy determined if you could run Fuzion or not? like in the live loader for saybayon, it lets you pick if you want to run XGL desktops or not!

This thread seems to be getting sidetracked to the inclusion of Compiz-Fusion in Gutsy. When I made my comment I was talking about Feisty since it's the current stable version.

It would be a little unfair to advertise Feisty with Compiz Fusion, then, since it does not come with it by default.

This is my exact point.
If Compiz-Fusion is included, with all the bells and whistles shown in the ad, by default, in Gutsy, then I could see making this ad and have it relate to Gutsy.

I think it is a good idea, IF you do it with a future version of Ubuntu that runs Compiz fusion by default, or at least is not running a beta version. Great idea, but for future versions I think.
Stick with it I say! :guitar:

how about we film it in feisty right now and use it to advertise gusty

Doesn't necessarily have to be an ad for Ubuntu. It can be for Linux in general.

I had an idea for a script if anyone would be able to do this. Here is the script:
Have a guy dressed in dark casual clothes, standing on a black background. Do not show his head, but instead his body whith his knees and head cut off. The commercial starts with the guy standing in the middle of the screen.
(show Compiz Fusion switching desktops using the desktop cube, hands possibly rotating it, from an e-mail client to OpenOffice)
"I use Linux for doing my basic desktop stuff like reading documents made by my publicising team using OpenOffice."
(Hands come up and "switch" from OpenOffice to Audacious using the Switch plugin in Compiz Fusion)
"I can listen to music using Audacious while working..."
(Hands rotate in a ring shape as Audicious switches to Mozzila Firefox using the Ring Switcher plugin)
"... and browse the web using Mozilla Firefox," (Show the guy downloading with download statusbar) "pumped up with my favorite plugins."
(Have the guy close Firefox with the "burn" animation in Compiz Fusion and OpenOffice open again, this time from a shrunken state)
"Oh yeah, and did I mention I can do all this without paying a dime?"
(Annoucer comes in as Ubuntu, Mandrivia, OpenSUSE, and Fedora logos and names show up at the bottom of the screen)
"Compute with Linux, Compute for free."
(end)
Anyone may make any corrections to the script that they like.

Idea:
Screen has 3 sections, top, middle, and bottom.
Linux, Windows, and Mac are in each section.
At the very bottom is a timeline.
You show the timeline scrolling along showing the different versions of linux and how they've progressed over time.
Start from the very begining and go to the present.
On each section show Price:
Voila!
(For best effect, have some sort of esoteric/minimalistic music playing in the background)

but the hp commercials are special effects relating to the tasks being accomplished. In the Ubuntu/Linux ad proposal, it's the actual GUI being shown.
