Hello,
I would like to share two great pieces of software for windows that you can use before installing Ubuntu.

There are two choices. SiSoft Sandra which has a "Lite" edition that's free
or
Everest Home Edition which is free.

They both give you info about your computer that you may not know if you didn't build it yourself.

The choice is yours.

Hope I can help,
majikstreet

Definitely a useful tool for anybody not familiar with their computer(s).

I'd like to remember or inform that SiSoft Sandra is a _non_ free diagnostic and benchmarking tool ( Free to try; $39.99 to buy ; Limitations: 50-module trial ). There are great free applications that would do just that and maybe more. Plus, I think I know my computer. I assembled it after all.

I changed the title to TIP instead of HOWTO and appended "SiSoft Sandra" to the end of it.

It should be pointed out that, while this is a handy tool, it's Windows only, and is not free. I do think there's a free (as in beer) version of it though (At least there was when I used it).

You don't have to guess, nor do you have to figure out Windows to figure out what is in your computer

a couple of things you should try:

lspci

cat /proc/cpuinfo

cat /proc/meminfo

Thanks,
I never knew about those commands to try.

Also, I didn't build my computer, so I really don't know every inch of it. I just think this is easier than having to dig through manuals.

I thought it was free, though. EDIT: The "Lite" version is free.

thanks,

Lavalys EVEREST Home Edition is a good (and free) alternative:

I think EVEREST is worth this thread. I'm going to add it to the post.
